Dear Mr. Moulton:
I saw the recent Washington Post article about your work in conservative
politics with interest. When I read that Shaun Kenney had said about you, I
thought that I should reach out to you.
I worked at the Catholic Diocese of Richmond for 25 years as the Respect Life
Coordinator in addition to other duties in social ministry. I also helped found
the Virginia Catholic Conference and served on its board of directors along
with Bishops Loverde and DiLorenzo. As a result of this work, I have great
relationships with the pro-life community and many Republicans, including
Shaun Kenney.
I recently became the Executive Director of Virginians for Alternatives to the
Death Penalty (VADP). One of my priorities in this new role is to meet with
political conservatives to talk about criminal justice in the Commonwealth. To
me, the death penalty is the poster child of everything that is wrong with our
criminal justice system - abuse of government power, geographic disparities,
etc.
I would love the opportunity to meet you and to talk about your views as a
conservative on criminal justice and the death penalty. I have had friendly and
productive conversations with a number of Republican members of the General
Assembly as well as with grassroots conservatives.
There seems to be a lot of energy among conservatives to talk about criminal
justice & the death penalty. In Kansas, Nebraska, Montana, & South Dakota
conservative Republicans are taking the lead in seeking an end to capital
punishment in their states.
Please let me know when would be a good time for us to meet over coffee or
lunch. I live in Richmond, so that would be easiest for me. But I could meet
you in northern Virginia as well.
Many thanks for your leadership in building civic involvement here in the
Commonwealth ...
Sincerely,
Michael E. Stone
Executive Director
