Year Established 1991

Organizational Mission Statement

(350 characters or less)
VADP is a statewide citizens’ organization dedicated to educating the public about
alternatives to the death penalty. Our goal is to end capital punishment in Virginia
through education, organizing, and public policy advocacy.

Brief Description of Organization — current programs and accomplishments; how you
finance your mission - (500 characters or less)
VADP convenes supporters in northern Virginia, Charlottesville, Richmond, Norfolk,
and Roanoke. These gatherings will take place twice a year — in the spring and fall.

During 2017 VADP presented public education events on the death penalty to secular and
faith community audiences in Fredericksburg, Dale City, Richmond, and Reston.

VADP played a key role in winning clemency from Governor McAuliffe to reduce the
death sentence of Ivan Teleguz to life in prison without parole in April 2017.

VADP is working with the Virginia Catholic Conference, ACLU of Virginia, and mental
health organizations on a bill to ban the execution of people with severe mental illness.

In 2017 VADP received funds from individuals (50%), grants (43%), and local faith
communities (7%).

Population Served

Program/ Project Name: Grassroots Education on the Death Penalty
Geographic Location of Project (indicate City, State, Country):

Target legislative districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Description of Project for which funding is sought — indicating population to be served

VADP has a goal of seeking a vote to abolish the death penalty in the 2020 session of the
Virginia General Assembly. VADP and its key partners — the Virginia Catholic
Conference and the ACLU of Virginia — have identified legislators who serve on key
committees that will consider any death penalty reform or abolition bills.

This project will educate local religious, civic, and business leaders in the districts of
these Delegates and Senators about the death penalty and seek their support for
legislative reform and abolition of capital punishment.

Goals and Objectives for achievement of Project and anticipated outcome.

The project goal is to build support from local religious, civic, and business leaders in the
districts of these Delegates and Senators for death penalty reform and abolition.
Objectives for this project in the 2018 calendar year are:

= Identify at least 50 significant religious, civic, and business leaders in 8 target
legislative districts identified by VADP and its partner organizations.

= Contact at least 20 of these leaders by phone and/or e-mail each week.
= Meet in person with at least 5 of these leaders each week.

= Recruit at least five local leaders in each target legislative district to contact their
legislator and advocate for legislation to exempt people with severe mental illness
from the death penalty, a bill supported by all major mental health organizations.

Staffing and timetable for implementation of Project

This project is carried out by the Field Director who travels across the state to meet
with local leaders in the target legislative districts and conduct education programs.

Describe how this Project resonates with the Daughter of Wisdom Mission.
This project is very much in tune with the mission of the Daughters of Wisdom.

Capital punishment is contrary to essential human dignity as articulated by Pope John
Paul II in Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life) and affirmed in the Catechism of the
Catholic Church (2266 & 2267).

For decades, the Vatican as well as the U.S. Catholic Bishops have called for an end to
executions. On May 6, 2015 the Virginia Bishops wrote, “By ending the use of the death
penalty we would take one important step — among significant others we must take — to
abandon the culture of death and embrace the culture of life.”
