VADP Board Meeting Minutes

Marilyn, Greg.

1. Approval of July 6th, 2010 minutes - approved.

2. Board self-assessment - based on by-laws, encourages some turn over.
Vote: approved. For those whose terms are up, submit self-assessment to
board one-month in advance.

3. Report on State Grantees Meeting July 14-16 in Alexandria, Virginia -

Discussion of national strategy - most likely to come from Supreme Court
(8 Amendment standards of decency). Hard core dp states need to get to
infrequent use, VADP is already following same type of strategy, ties in to
TIDES grant etc. Va is integrated with litigators and abolition movement.
Funds are limited, goal is 2025 for full abolition.

4. TIDES grant application, “big picture” perspective - Helena expressed
concern about including more grass-roots education, fundraising. Grantors
are skeptical of old guard movement.

5. Butler Family Fund grant proposal - Jon suggests building a relationship,
find 990 and ask advice, then ask for money/support. Butler family is part of
TIDES.

6. Tax filing - update on filing extension - IRS said untimely, but it was fine.
7. Finance Committee - Helena looking to establish a consolidated report.
8. Board development and fundraising committee (see below)

a. John Whitehead - Steve/Helena/Greg - Greg to set up meeting in
September.

b. Sen Donald McEachin (Dist 9) - Steve and Jerry.

c. June appeal - Matt S. - $5,645 - net

d. Linell’s fashion show - Linell. Ongoing.

e. Gov. Kaine - Steve, plan to send letter in Sept.

f. Quaker meeting - donations coming in, Steve to follow up with Catholic
groups

g. Church - Jerry, no update.

9. Matt’s unemployment insurance. - runs for another 5 or 6 weeks

10. New ED update - (Steve not present) - interviews will be on Aug 19" in
person at VOP office or Richmond, candidates are strong, in person
interview with Steve most likely not necessary. Committee will follow up
with recommendations and inform board for action.
