Keynote Speaker

David Bruck is a Washington and Lee
University Law School Professor and Director
of the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse.

A criminal defense attorney since 1976, David
has argued seven death penalty cases in the
U.S. Supreme Court and over 70 capital
appeals in state and lower federal courts.
David has represented capital defendants at
trial in more than 20 cases — including Susan
Smith, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and Dylann Roof.

Award History

The VADP Citizen Advocate of the Year
award is named after Betty Gallagher:

Betty Gallagher lived in Charlottesville and
worked as a biological research scientist until
she retired. She served on the VADP board

of directors and was active in abolition work.
Betty passed away in October 2014.

Award Recipient

Rob Lee is the third recipient of the Betty
Gallagher Citizen Advocate of the Year Award.
Rob is the Executive Director of the Virginia

. Capital Resource Representation Center — a
nonprofit law firm that provides post-conviction
legal representation for Virginia inmates who
have been sentenced to death. The Center also
presents clemency petitions to the Governor.
Rob manages a team of attorneys who have
saved the lives of numerous death row inmates
— his mission for the last two decades.
