VADP Board Meeting Minutes
January 26, 2010 7:30 - 8:30 PM
Attending: Lynn Greer, Linell Patterson, Scott Vollum, Greg Gelburd,
Jon Sheldon, Hunter Mabry, Steve Northup, Betty Gallagher, Helena
Cobban, Marilyn Stark, Beth Panilaitis
1. 2010 General Assembly Session - Due to committee
appointments, we have enough votes in the Senate Courts of
Justice Committee to stop some expansion. Beth will let the
Board know as soon as expansion bills are put on the docket for
Senate Courts - Board members who are able are encouraged to
attend.
2. Update on November fund appeal (as of 1/22/10)
a. Donations received - $16,168
b. Cost of mailing - $2,348.96
3. Financial Overview & Fundraising
a. Current funds
i. Total current funds = $35, 900
ii. December expenses = $7,200
b. Fundraising strategies
. Jon will continue to approach lawyers who are held
in high regard in the community and ask them to
commit to raising funds from 10-15 other lawyers.
ii. Greg will approach some of his colleagues with a
strategy similar to Jon.
iii. Linell will send letters to EMU professors and will
ask Jon for pointers.
iv. Scott will reach out to academics, especially those
from other Universities.
v. Scott will look into Facebook fundraising.
vi. Lynn knows an auctioneer and will find out about his
stance on the death penalty.
vii. Betty will contact Barbara Ehrenreich about being a
potential speaker.
viii. Beth will submit an LOI to FADP to see if we will be
considered for funding in the late spring.
4. NCADP grant and potential staff person in Virginia - Beth will
meet with NCADP to work out details of new NCADP staff
person in VA.
5. Future board meeting dates - Beth will schedule next meetings
including May strategic planning meeting.
