Mike Farrell has spoken, written and
lobbied against the death penalty for over
30 years. Since 1994 he has been president
of Death Penalty Focus, the California group
he founded and one of the national abolition
movement's leading organizations. Lunch

Mike is spokesperson for Concern America,
an international refugee aid and development

organization, Co-Chair Emeritus of the VADP Strategy
California Committee of Human Rights Watch,
and a Good Will Ambassador for the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

& Progress

Keynote Introduction
Mike is known for his role as “B.J. Hunnicutt” in
the iconic television series M*A*S*H. He is also

a writer, director and producer. Keynote

Award Recipient

Joe Giarratano is the fourth recipient of the
Betty Gallagher Citizen Advocate Award.

Joe was sentenced to death in 1979 for a crime
he did not commit. He was unable to prove « Recipient
innocence in court due to procedural rules

that barred review of errors not objected to

at the time of the trial. Closing

Award Presentation

« Introduction

Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder granted Joe
a conditional pardon, commuting his sentence
to life. While in prison Joe studied law and
helped other prisoners with their cases.

Given parole late in 2017, Joe now works
for the Innocence Project at the University of
Virginia Law School.

Joe is honored for his work filing legal petitions
from prison that helped save the life of Earl
Washington, Jr. and for prison reform in Virginia.
