HOT TIME ON THE TRAIL
5™ ANNUAL CANALWAY TRAIL CELEBRATION
ATTRACTS RECORD NUMBER OF EVENTS
Two kinds of records were set across New York State on the first weekend in June. One was the
unusually hot weather for so early in the summer. The other was the number of events
registered as part of the 5‘ annual Canalway Trail Celebration: 43. And reports indicate that
the heat did not keep people from participating in the Celebration, which once again coincided
with National Trails Day.
This year’s activities ranged from trail work projects
and bike rides to concerts, fairs and festivals. In Oswego
County, a dozen people built a new trail bridge in the
Great Bear Recreational Area adjacent to the Oswego
Canal, while in Schenectady 19 hardy souls spruced up
the Trail near its eastern end. It was a great time to be Newark: As part of Community Pride Day,
volunteers in Newark cleaned up along the canal
and the Canalway Trail and also worked ona
festivities for Onondaga Lake Day, sponsored by the new canal side mural.
at a lakeshore, and more than 600 people joined in the
Onondaga Lake Partnership. Farther west, Brockport’s first- time Celebration event, with a
concert on the Rose Lummis canal tour boat, was well attended.
The Canalway Trail Celebration is organized by Parks
& Trails New York, the NYS Canal Corporation and
the Canalway Trails Association New York, with
financial support from the Erie Canalway National
Heritage Corridor, to increase awareness of the
Canalway Trail as a world-class recreationway and
tourist destination and acknowledge the many
volunteers who support the trail throughout the year.

“Thank goodness, Canal Clean Sweep is over! We had a good time, but it was hard work.
| We have a lot of trees (scrap trees with shallow roots) that line the trail and the last
storm felled at least 8 of them. Plus, we are making arrangements for 2 large trees to be
trimmed back with split branches that overhang our fishing/observation deck.
We did not have a large turn-out and did not get all the branches pulled out. They are
still in piles along the trail and the roadside is a steep climb of 40 feet. | think the
weather was so good after 18 inches of snow 5 days earlier, that people worked in their
own yards.
The Towpath Trail on the summit of the Chenango Canal is once again open for hiking!
Thanks to consistent (and persistent!) board members Ron Neff, Jim Mitchell, Mary
Bikowsky, Fran Van Slyke and Tom Knapp for chain-sawing and hauling limbs to clear 7 or
8 fallen trees off the trail. Ira Glunts brought his wheel barrow, repeatedly filled it with
branches and brought to the roadside for pick up by the NYS Highway Department. The last winter storm also took
down our electrical wire we need to bring electricity several hundred feet to where we hold events (it was retrieved).
Every time a tree falls in that area, it jeopardizes power.
The Bouckville Mill, (the original Motts Cider Mill, on the canal) also experienced trees falling into their back driveway,
which is actually the original towpath. They spent a couple of hours chain-sawing and we cleared it out.
Thank you to the Colgate students who showed up through COVE and the women's basketball teammates. Also, a big
thank you to Judi, a passer-by who drove in from Utica and noticed our group working. She joined us and ended up
staying for the day!
Even though the pathway is clear, more fallen limbs still need to be dragged to the roadside for pickup. We will
establish another date to invite participants to help and then join us for a picnic on the deck!
We used the water and vests and thought the Tee Shirts were a great idea. The Chenango Canal Association provided
workers with a picnic lunch on our deck. The volunteers had a good time!” Diane Van Slyke, The Chenango Canal
Association

In Lockport, parent and Scout Leader Lee Butler of Williamsville was helping Boy Scouts from Troop 440 pick up debris
along the bike path that runs along the canal.
"We started at the east end of Lockport and picked up litter along the trail and down the shoreline for a 5-mile stretch.
Several of the Scouts were working on merit badges. We had a group of eleven pick up trash on stretch of the Erie Canal
Heritage Trail between Lockport and Gasport. Our group included seven Boy Scouts and four adult advisors.
In about four hours the Scouts filled four of the trash bags you provided with litter found along the trail and in the riprap
by the canal. We expected the beer and soda bottles, but were surprised at the number of sports drink bottles we
found. It seems that a number of people who use the trail for fitness are not too conservation minded.
Our group really enjoyed the beautiful weather. | took photos, but they are the old fashioned kind and need to be
developed. If you need more information about our small effort to maintain this trail, please call.” - Lee Butler, Scout

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

The second annual Canal Clean Sweep reminded Lockport’s Dennis Caisse of his tour of duty in the Army, and also of his
mischievous youth as a Washington Street teen.
“It wasn’t the mean streets of Washington Street of today, but the real folksy streets of 1960s,” the retired teacher and
librarian said. “We used to sneak down to the overpass and drink a few beers and toss the bottles over and watch them
smash on the rocks. Now, 40 years later, I’m down here picking up the glass.”
On Saturday, Dennis and Carol Caisse were among the 25 volunteers who helped clean up the park off Clinton Street.
“We're trying to help others,” Dennis said. “It reminded me of being in the Army, a police call, but it was much more fun
than a police call ... If it moves, pick it up. If it doesn’t move, paint it.”
Unlike the Army, Clean Sweep was loosely organized and the volunteers were truly volunteers. Dennis called it a multi-
sectarian effort to beautify and to clean up America.
The army called it an “ecology call” in the 1970s. The state calls it Clean Sweep.
The state Canal Corporation supplied bags and the volunteers brought gloves and rakes. The gloves were a particularly
good idea because unmentionables littered the park.
Most everyone filled up two large bags and could have used wheel barrows to haul it away. There was a grill filled with
barnacles, a garbage can, roofing, tar paper, sheet metal, a canister, a gas regulator, beer bottles and condoms.
Dennis thought it was amazing junk with tubes and shopping baskets and weird stuff. However, he said, “I was hoping
we wouldn’t find Love Canal stuff, things oozing out.”
Carol wasn’t that impressed with their haul or the gas thing that was filled with barnacles.
“It was nothing very interesting, just junk,” the former English teacher said. “It was kind of loosely organized. When |
was picking up trash | was thinking of ways to organize it better.”
She felt that a second group could police the area today and pick up an equal amount of trash. She thinks the next
cleanup should be devoted to another area like Clinton Street hill.
The Caisses were happy they volunteered. “It was just because it was a fun thing to do it and it was going to be a nice
day, so we just decided to do it,” Carol said. “You feel like you’re doing a good deed.”
The couple went to Mass at St. Patrick’s and then to Tim Hortons before moving on to Upson Park.
“My life now is trying to help others, trying to gain more spirituality,” Dennis said.
There is still plenty of junk left in the park, and Dennis suggested it might be a good project of the Boy Scouts and Girl
Scouts, if the kids are careful.
Niagara Falls had a similar project along Cayuga Creek on Saturday morning.

Campus — City Relations Committee, SUNY Oswego students and City of Oswego residents worked in teams to clean
sweep waterfronts of canal and Lake Ontario within City limits. The following article in The Palladium Times describes
the event.
The Palladium Times
by Sarah McCrobie, Staff Writer
Nearly 60 local residents, including college students, educators and elected officials, helped kick off Earth Week Sunday
afternoon by cleaning up the Lake Ontario shoreline.
"It's a good positive way for people to join together and work in unity," said Martha Hammill, co-chair of the event.
The local Earth Day "Clean Sweep" was sponsored by the Campus/City Relations Committee (CCRC) who did a similar
project last year. "Everyone said, ‘Hey, it was such a success last year, let's do it again," Hammill said.
With temperatures in the mid-60s and the sun shining, five dozen people gathered at Breitbeck Park Pavilion and
scattered into teams as part of the spring cleanup. "Last Sunday, we were looking out the windows saying, 'Oh no, a
nor'easter's coming. We'll never be able to get this off the ground!’ But, it cleared, and it's beautiful outside. We're
delighted," Hammill said.
Lauren Jones, a first-grader at Minetto Elementary School, said she heard about the event in school and thought it would
be fun to help out. Along with her grandmother, Grace Zagame, Jones picked up food wrappers, bottles and other litter
strewn about Breitbeck Park. "It's a beautiful day, and we decided it would be a good thing to do together," said
Zagame.
Like Jones, a group from SUNY Oswego also heard about the cleanup and wanted to participate. Sarah Pickering and
other members of the Beta Alpha Psi accounting and finance organization picked up trash along the West First Street
Pier. "We really wanted to help the environment, and figured this would be a good way to do it," Pickering said.
“Hopefully, we can set an example as college students, and encourage other people to become more involved."
At the end of the two-hour Clean Sweep, many of the volunteers had filled their 30 gallon bags, and some had multiple
bags. According to Hammill, food wrappers topped the list, while styro-foam and cigarette butts were high on the list.
"It went very well," Hammill said, noting that she hopes the Clean Sweep will continue in the future.
"When you have things that work well, there's no reason not to do it, and this is one of those events," she said.

“We had a very successful event on the old Champlain Canal in Waterford in front of the Waterford Museum. The canal

were hold trashing. We were able to pull out many limbs to the shore and pulled out bags of floating trash. | asked the
Canal Corp if they would please remove the limbs from the canal bank and was assured that they would. This has not
happened, even though a crew of workers has since used a chain saw to make the logs smaller. | am concerned that the
limbs will end up in the canal again and would hate to see that happen after all our hard work. | realize that the Canal
Corps. focus currently is the opening of the system but would appreciate anything you might be able to do to help us

WHITEHALL -- The Canal Clean Sweep commemorated Earth Day this weekend at locations across the state. Volunteers
picked up debris along the banks of the Champlain Canal in Whitehall and Schuylerville on Saturday.
“Everybody gets together and chips in, then for a week or two, they feel good about themselves and their town," said
Tony Cardamone, of Whitehall. He coordinated about 50 volunteers at the headwaters of the state canal system in
Whitehall.
His group picked up about 40 bags of trash, or two town dump trucks’
worth. The group also worked at the Amtrak station. There, they picked up debris, removed a dilapidated bench and
repainted a faded drab maroon bench with a fresh coat of steel gray.
Soon, Cardamone hopes to get permission from the owner of an unused building to allow local youths to paint scenic
murals on the boarded-up windows. "This is the first thing people see when they come to our town," he said, pointing
to the run-down, flat-iron shaped building across from the train depot.
Volunteers also extended their efforts to a walkway across the canal that connects two recently renovated town parks.
One features a monument honoring the region's history as the birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
Afterward, volunteers relaxed in the town park with a barbecue picnic of food, donated by local businesses. They ate
outside, during the first truly warm weekend of the season, while listening to acoustic guitar music played by David
Gallagher of Lake George. On Sunday, a group of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts returned to clean up around the town
recreation building.

Finger Lakes Times
By JIM MILLER
Monday, April 23, 2007
LYONS - Cheers erupted Saturday as three volunteers hung the last piece of a 10-foot-by-20-foot mural on an old bridge
abutment along the Erie Canal near Water Street. “Last screw to go,” shouted Chamber of Commerce President Mark
DeCracker, who spearheaded the project.
The two dozen onlookers cheered again a few minutes later as Joe Snell drove a skyjack out of the way, revealing the full
image: A trolley crossing a bridge over the canal as mules pull a barge down the waterway. The H.G. Hotchkiss
Peppermint Factory, home of the product that made Lyons famous long ago, stands in the background.
Based on an early 1900s postcard from the collection of the late Winston Dobbins, the mural shows a view of Lyons that
no longer exists. The canal has been moved a few dozen yards to the south since then, the trolley line is long defunct
and the bridge, too, has been demolished. But the abutment remains, a fitting home, the volunteers believe, for their
mural.
Creating it took months and turned into a multi-generational effort. Local students helped paint it. Trolley historian
Shelden King, 74, was on hand to offer his advice. And dozens of others donated time and supplies. “I couldn't imagine
what it would look like in December [when work started] and how much it's really transformed,” said James Zeger of
Sodus, an RIT student who served as the project's primary artist. It took a few coats of paint, he said, to get the colors
right.
Yesterday, volunteers split the wooden mural into nine pieces and took them from LaGasse Works on Old Route 31,
where they'd painted it, to the abutment. Other helpers attached a plywood frame to the abutment to hold the mural.
“The hard part was drilling in the cement,” DeCracker said. “That took all morning.”
By early afternoon, however, the mural began to take shape. Jack McCranels, Stuart Smart and Snell hammered in the
last piece - the upper left corner - around 2 p.m. DeCracker lined everyone up in front for a photo. “Fabulous,” King
said. “This is great.” OK,” DeCracker said. “Now we can start painting.”
The mural is, in fact, only about 95 percent done: Zeger said a second bridge in the background needs some work, along
with the boat and the grass; and the ropes connecting the mules to the boat still have to be added.
Cutting the mural also caused some damage that volunteers will have to touch up, and they need to apply acrylic sealer
and varnish to protect it from the elements.
But from a distance, the mural already looks finished. And the volunteers have already heard people in town talking
about it. “If we paint it, they will come,” said DeCracker, who hopes more murals will eventually greet visitors to Lyons.
In the meantime, plaques will be added to the abutment with information about the peppermint industry, the canal and
the trolley. DeCracker also hopes to name the area around the abutment G. Winston Dobbins Park in honor of his friend,
who helped clean debris from the area before he died last year.
A dedication ceremony is planned for May, and DeCracker said representatives from
the New York State Canal Corp. are expected to attend.
“We still have plenty of work to do before the formal dedication of Park in late May. We will be working from 10-2 p.m.
on Saturday at the Mural site. Thanks go out to everyone who made the Canal Clean Sweep and mural installation last
Saturday a great success!” - Mark DeCracker, E.R.I.E. Member
