Scope and Content:

The collection includes Eleanor Stein's scholarly writings, biographical materials, her Albany Law teaching materials, her University at Albany teaching materials, awards and ephemera, research materials, writings, notes, and books.

Biographical / Historical:

For more than 25 years, Eleanor Stein worked at the New York State Public Service Commission, serving for two of those decades as an administrative law judge and mediator. Among her accomplishments, Stein presided over New York's Consolidated Edison climate adaptation and resiliency collaborative, managed the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard proceedings, and mediated the prudence investigation into the consolidated Edison summer 2006 Queens power outage. During her tenure at the Commission, Stein was part of the Climate Action Council and a member of the leadership team that crafted strategies to reach a target of 80% greenhouse gas reduction for New York State by 2050. Stein retired from her position in 2015.

Stein continues to lecture on climate change in the courts and climate change law at the University at Albany and at Albany Law School. She received the University at Albany's Award for Excellence in Teaching by Part-time Faculty in 2003. Stein is a board member of the Rocky Mountain Institute eLab and of EcoViva. She also consults on clean energy and climate change.

Stein attended Barnard College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manchester. She attended Columbia Law School and received her Juris Doctor from the City University of New York School of Law. Stein also holds a Master of Laws LLM in Climate Change Law and Policy from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Eleanor Stein donated materials in this collection to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives in 2019 and 2020 .
