Dear CMN member:

Wouldn't you love to share the values and resources of CMN with other
friends in your own network? Have you found Pass /t On!, the CMN Web site,
the CMN e-mail discussion group, national and regional gatherings, and a
supportive network of friends and colleagues useful in your work? Well, it’s
time to pass it on by encouraging your colleagues to become members of
our network.

This year CMN has the goal of increasing our membership
by the

magic number 100. We can do it with your help. All you
have to

do is get a friend to join CMN and you will be eligible to
enter a

drawing for your own free one-year family membership
(or the equi-

valent applied to your business membership). The
drawing will be

held at the national gathering in Los Angeles in October

2003.

(You do not have to be present to win). You will receive
one

chance to win for every new membership you generate.
Three free

memberships will be given away.

How do you enter the drawing? It’s simple: First, write your name on the
enclosed brochure membership form to get credit for the new member. Give
your friend the brochure. Have them fill out the membership form and send
it in to the CMN central office. Done! Your name will be entered in the
drawing each time your enthusiasm generates a new member.

If you have more than one friend who would like to be a member,
« make copies of the enclosed form OR
¢ print copies from the CMN Web site (www.cmnonline.org) OR
¢ order more brochures from Jean Schwartz (508/620-0736 or
Mezzobean@aol.com).

TO GET CREDIT FOR THE MEMBERSHIP DRAWING, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE
YOUR NAME ON THE FORM.

That’s all there is to it. Thank you for helping to make this world more

include a combination of presentation by CMN members of some new and
old songs, discussion about the specific songs and topics, audience
participation in both singing and discussion, with some opportunities for
audience members to offer and lead their own songs. The following is
our proposed schedule:

12:00 - 1:00 Animals and the Envir it: songs to help children
learn about and protect the world we live in.

1:00 - 2:00 Understanding Ourselves and Others, Songs of Peace
and Justice: songs that help develop self-esteem, respect for oneself
and others, cooperation, sharing knowledge of similarities and
differences, on personal and cultural levels.

2:00 - 3:00 Celebrations and Holidays: songs as a way to develop
appreciation of the richness and diversity of all peoples, cultures and
historic events.

3:00 - 4:00 Open-ended Sing-Along (including Silly Songs) and
Discussion: a musical “potluck".

Since time immemorial, people have been seeking out others who

together and swap songs. In the 1980s, like-minded educators, music
educators, parents, performers, radio hosts, and others who cared about
the quality of children’s music, found each other and began to build this
network. We share not only songs but our concerns for the empowering
ways that adults and young people can communicate through music.

What brings us together are our shared values. The Children’s Music
Network exists to support the creation and dissemination of life-affirming,
multicultural musical forms by and for young people. Our values include
cooperation, diversity, the building of self-esteem, respect and
responsibility for our environment, and an understanding of nonviolence
and social justice.

Our membership includes early childhood educators, music educators,
performers, songwriters, music listeners of all ages, parents, media
people, and those involved in all levels of the teaching, recording,
promoting, distributing, and singing of children’s music. Diverse in age,
ethnicity and geographic reach, The Children’s Music Network is
committed to being an important social force as we enter the millennium
to act as a positive catalyst for education and community building
through music.

ATTACHMENT TO CMN PROPOSAL FOR PRE-CONFERENCE DAY

NOTE: We had a pre-conference day in 1993 which included our entire schedule
that appeared in the Conference Program Book. In 1997 and 1998, the program
was cut to four hours and the complete schedule was not included in the program
book (which may have adversely affected attendance). We are keeping this years’
proposal to four hours, but would greatly appreciate it if you would include the
complete schedule in the program book. Also, as we do not know now which of our
members will be attending the conference and might have scheduling conflicts with
their own presentations, please be advised that our list of facilitators may vary.

Excellent well-thought out points, Monty. CMN needs people who care and
speak their minds! | so respect your enthusiasm.

As you intimated, these are issues that the leadership has been struggling
with for years and years. When | first met Ruth Pelham at a showcase twelve
years ago, | said, "Why isn't CMN bigger? It's such a great organization."
She gave me a big hug and we became lifelong friends in our shared goal to
bring the great news that is CMN to more like-minded folk (sounds religious,
no?). Five or six years later that | was sitting in on board meetings with
Ruth trying my best to make it happen. Most of this was a lot of fun. |

loved working on the board, but it was very discouraging at times, too. Most
of that was due to a focus on what we lacked: money and members. Instead
of

focusing on our abundance of talented, caring members, we wanted more.
I'm

hearing that, again reading the posts on email and | smile when | hear that
same conversation | had with Ruth!

Being back among the membership fold, now, | have some thoughts | wish to
share. | WISH we were on the cusp of a revolution in children's music, but |
think what we're hearing on XM is an attempt by corporate America to grab
some of The Wiggles $35 million per year. It happened twenty years ago
when

all of the big music companies opened up children's divisions and promptly
closed them five years later. The future of arts-in-education is - and

should be- in the schools and the libraries. Almost every organization who
tries to grow bigger and fatter in this market has problems.

| bring that up for this reason: there will always be and XM ora hit TV

show to stimulate some to greater heights. That's cool. And | hope some of
us make it to the top (including me)! But CMN works on a deeper, more
profound level. It's kind of like Tai-Chi or meditation - not everyone does

it but it is extremely powerful for those who gravitate towards it. CMN, in

its current and | hope forever form, is not going to be a huge group with
10,000 members. It's going to stay small and mighty because the number of
people who walk to the beat of this drum are only a handful.

Yes, it would be great to have more money to ease the burden, but | now
side

with those who believe that we should roll back the size of PIO! | think we
should cut expenses and nurture ourselves to be a small, sustainable
organization that never drifts from the principles on which we were founded:
diversity, equality, etc. A bigger more professional organization is a
different animal that we need not turn into. This might seem to some like

going backwards, but | believe that our volunteer-based group cannot
survive

long term if we spend beyond our means. Unless we get some gung-ho
person

who is willing to go after grants and/or drive the membership up, we're
going to constantly be faced with this members/money issue and forget why
we

got together as a group in the first place.

So, | ask those of you who wish to make us bigger ask yourselves this
question: how will that serve you and us? Are you not getting from CMN what
you need, now? If you're not, consider joining the Action Core, the board or
writing for PIO! Whatever you put in to CMN will come back to you in
friendships, lessons learned and the spirit of cooperation. If we grow

larger, let it happen as a result of our good works and good times. Let's

not let membership and money become the tail that wags the dog.

Thanks for listening.

PROPOSAL FOR RECIPROCAL ADS

Hi board members,

On the membership committee, we have been tossing around the idea of writing to other
organizations with similar values/purposes to ours, and offering an arrangement of reciprocal
ads. Purly has been amassing a list of suggested organizations, and we would like your
brainstorming efforts as well to get this project moving. For example, here in Columbus, | was
asked to organize the children’s music tent for the Central Ohio Folk festival. The Folk Society
has a fund-raising policy of asking for sponsors for various tents, which costs $150, which covers
the s=cost of creating a banner and bringing in a little extra capitol. | asked if we could waive
that fee, use an existing CMN banner, and advertise the festival for free on our web-site. The
Folk Society was all for that, so we are each getting free advertising in a place that we normally
wouldn't.

lam copying below the letter that we are currently bouncing around the membership
committee. We invite feedback on the letter, but also are asking for ideas of other organizations
that we can add to our list and send this off to. This could be for web-presence reciprocity, or an
example like the one that | gave above as well. Obviously, at the moment the letter is signed by
me but it could be from anyone of us, or for that matter from anyone in CMN who may have a
contact that they think would be useful to pursue, with board approval first.

Hi,

In this era of challenging finances for small, non-profit organizations, we have been
brainstorming about how to expand our outreach efforts, reach potential new members, and
advertise without spending money that we don’t have. In addition to this, we are always looking
for ways that we can collaborate with other like-minded music organizations, to support each
other and help each other cross-pollinate.

One of the ideas that we thought of was to offer reciprocal advertising to like-minded
organizations that we would like to help support. We have a web-site and an online members
publication, called Pass /t On!, and we could list your organization on both our web-site and in
our publication, in exchange for a short notice about Children’s Music Network being advertised
somewhere on your web-site and publication.

So, in case you do not know, The Children’s Music Network is an organization founded in the
1980s, by teachers, performers, songwriters, radio hosts, and parents who cared about the
quality and content of children's music. We were established as The Children's Music
Network (CMN)—a nonprofit association that now has members across the United States and
Canada. Our membership, diverse in age and ethnicity, includes music and classroom teachers,
full-time and part-time performers, songwriters, youth advocates, librarians, day care providers,
song leaders and choral directors, music therapists, educational consultants and trainers, radio
and TV program staff, therapists and social workers, clergy, medical care providers, families.

In our publication, Pass /t On!, which is distributed three times a year to our membership, we
have listed our principles as such: children’s music is a powerful means of encouraging
cooperation, celebrating diversity, enhancing self-esteem, teaching peace and promoting
nonviolence, growing environmental awareness and responsibility, and advocating for social
justice.

As we are a national organization, spread across this continent mainly, we have local chapters
that seek to support each other through local gatherings, where members meet and stay in
touch to share songs, skills, resources, and ideas about empowering ways adults and young
people can communicate through music. And we have fun in the process!

You can see more about us at our website: http://www.cmnonline.org

So, would reciprocal advertising be something that would be of interest to your organization?
We would see this as a way to alert our membership to your organization/publication, and to
alert your membership/readership to ours. Please let me know if you would be open to this idea!
Thanks so much,

Joanie Calem
