SOCIETY OF INDIAN PSYCHOLOGISTS
BUSINESS MEETING
June 15, 2000
The 2000 business meeting of the Society of Indian Psychologists was called to order by
President Carolyn Barcus in Logan, Utah. Mark Daniels read the minutes of the previous
meeting. They were accepted as presented. Patricia Alexander presented the treasurer’s report
indicating a balance os $1,252.22.
Carolyn Barcus gave the president’s report beginning with greetings from former SIP
presidents Mary Clearing Sky, Joseph Trimble, and Doug McDonald. After viewing a video
tape of the opening ceremony of the 1999 APA Conference in Boston, MA where Doug
McDonald lead a Lakota blessing, Carolyn presented the APA Presidential Citation given to the
Society of Indian Psychologists by APA President Dick Suinn at the opening ceremony in
Boston. A report was made on the Council of National Psychological Associations for the
Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interests (CNPAAEMI). The group provided a booklet for the
members on doing research with ethnic minorities. The Multicultural Summit 2001 and Indian
mascot issues was presented as the primary issues before the council. American Indian Health
Care Providers Leaders Conference is being developed with the assistance of Gail Mason and
should be active beginning in 2001.
The by-laws committee of Candace Fleming and John Peregoy reported that John had
drafted a short and concise initial draft of by-laws. There was a plan to put them on the web
page for review (www.okstate.edu/osu/orgs/sip.htm).
Discussion of a proposed name change of the Society of Indian Psychologists included
many proposed names. Further discussion involved problems of not being recognized if the
name were changed. The discussion was tabled until next year.
The election of officers resulted in the following:
President
Carolyn Barcus, Utah State University
President-Elect
John Chaney, Oklahoma State University
Secretary
Jacque Gray, University of North Dakota
Treasurer
Patricia Alexander, Oklahoma State University
Carolyn Barcus proposed a nominating committee to find people to fill the positions in
the future. This was modified through discussion to a Council of Elders to propose nominees for
election during the meeting. This Council could be made up of Elders such as Candace Fleming
and Arthur Blue. It was requested that the pipe stone necklaces presented to officers and student
representatives by Mary Clearing Sky be located and passed on to the new representatives.
Carolyn Barcus proposed an increase in dues for members (not students) to help with the
costs of representing SIP. She indicated without the support of her university she would have
had to personally pay for trips such as the one to APA in Boston and that this should be covered
by SIP. Through discussion it was modified to a sliding scale for dues that would range from
$15-30 per year depending upon ability to pay. The $5 for student dues will remain the same.
The membership dates were changed from January to January to June to June to coincide with
the meeting in Utah.
An ethics committee was proposed by Carolyn Barcus that would examine the ethics
code as applied to Indians and how modifications may need to be addressed. Judy Ferris
indicated she had been contacted to provide internet consultation on working with American
Indians. The issue of technology also needs to be included in the ethical issues. Carolyn Barcus
is seeking volunteers to serve on this committee that are thoughtful and interested in the topic.
Those interested are to send Carolyn a notice by e-mail including why they are interested. The
committee will be made up of 5 members with a 2 year commitment for each.
A possible merger with the Canadian Psychologists were referred to Carolyn and the
executive committee.
