Grannies for Peace 11th annual vigil at the Tulip Fest.
"Protect and Support Our Children"
By mickielynn on 2017-05-11 16:01:44
In just a couple of days Grannies for Peace will hold its annual vigil in Washington Park on the day before Mother's Day,
near some of the most beautiful tulips in Albany. Each year we have had an anti-war theme from the point of view of
grandmothers, mothers and children (which pretty much includes all human beings since we have all been children and
grandchildren.) This Year our theme highlights the need to protect and support our children, meaning all the children in
the world. All the future generations of leaders and parents, and teachers and workers and artists, and scientists, and
inventors and makers, and peacemakers, This is the leaflet that we will be handing out during and after our hour long silent
vigil (held from 1 to 2 PM in a spot near the Moses Statue in the Park.) Protect and Support Our Children Grannies for
Peace treasure children, all children. They are our hope for the future. We must all support policies which protect them and

Support child nutrition programs - school meals, summer food programs & food stamps. In our country of abundance, let no
child go hungry. [caption id="attachment_9743" align="aligncenter" width="458"]

Mother's Day messages that resonate with ours for 2017. Let them compliment our heartfelt protection of children in this
time of militarism, racism, greed and quests for more and more "power" through weapons of war.

message from Code Pink accompanying the powerful graphic above: Yesterday, the Afghan people suffered the
effects of the largest non-nuclear bomb ever dropped. The Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB) is
21,600-pounds of explosive. And you know what’s also massive about this bomb? It cost $16 million just to kill
36 individuals! Nicknamed by the military as Mother of all Bombs, the MOAB is a mother’s worst nightmare.
This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the giving and loving of life that mothers bring. Instead of increasing military
spending by $54 billion to drop massive bombs, we need massive increases in love, health, greenery, education,
good food, peace and all the other things mothers need for their children.[...] Let’s rise together for peace this
Mother’s Day to call for a world without weapons and war, without violence and hate, without bans and walls,
where our tax dollars are spent on programs that support life rather than war. Toward a world where no mother
loses her child to bombs, guns or war!

Whether as fighters, drone operators or other fodder for needless wars. Or here at home where
they are denied the health care, education, nutrition, and safe decent housing that they need to thrive, we are mortgaging our
children's and grandchildren's futures to pay for and fight wars[/caption] And Standing Women is another organization which
has been standing for peace in public places for almost as long as the Grannies have been doing, although they generally
stand on Mother's Day itself. But we have listed our events with them for most of those years.
This year they also focused on protecting the world's
children. Here's part of their message:
DECLARATION OF STANDING We are standing for the world’s children and grandchildren, and for the seven
generations to come. We dream of a world where all of our children have safe drinking water, clean air to
breathe, and enough food to eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their minds and
healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they have a warm, safe and loving place to call home.
A world where they don’t live in fear of violence--in their homes, in their neighborhoods, in their schools, or in
their world. This is the world of which we dream. This is the cause for which we stand. When we allow
ourselves to expand and feel the wonder of our tenderness for any child, for all children... we bridge the
boundaries, the separations that hold us divided. Instead, we hear the call to be connected, to be a Circle of
Nations* that can co-create a globally shared future. Let us listen together to the call of our children and their
future. What is needed that they may survive and thrive? Please join us for a moment of global silence to
invite and envision a positive future for Earth's children. What is the call saying to you?
