Please Help Me Understand!

By anitamckay on 2008-11-06 08:58:30

Our Presidential election had had its historic outcome. Now we wait to see the course the Obama Administration will take.
The problems it faces are immediate and severe. One is our odd and dangerous foreign policy.

Can anyone explain the United States' foreign policy, because it is a mystery to me! Here are some examples:

Earlier this year, Mauritania had its first free election ever. A couple of months ago, the elected government was overthrown
by a military coup. Two of the countries/organizations speaking out against the coup were the United States and...al Qaeda!
How did we wind up on the same side!?

The freely elected government of Nepal remains on the US list of terrorist organizations.

We recognize and support Taiwan but not Tibet.

We invaded Afghanistan to liberate the women (after they suffered for six years under the Taliban), but in the United States
three women a day die from domestic violence.

Suffering people in countries such as the Sudan and Burma have pleaded for years for help from being slaughtered by brutal
dictators. We invaded Iraq, supposedly to liberate the country, without being asked by the people of that country.

Is there a unifying philosophy underlying our foreign policy, or is it only reactive and self-serving? Can anyone help me
understand?
