Diplomacy Not Bombs: Grannies' Saturday Vigil

By maudeaster on 2009-05-08 11:31:59

Grannies for Peace will call for Diplomacy, Not Bombs! at their 3rd annual Mother’s Day Weekend Silent Vigil for Peace, at
the Tulip Festival on Saturday, May 9, from 1-2 PM, near the Moses Statue.

Dot Richards, grandmother of 12 from Delmar, explains, “On this holiday weekend that celebrates the commitment of
mothers, we stand in silence amidst the tulips to share the wish of mothers everywhere — that our children and grandchildren
may be safe from war. We especially call on the US to rely on diplomacy, not bombs, to bring about the political settlements
needed to make children safe in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East.”

Decrying the deaths and destruction caused by US bombs, Grannies for Peace will hold banners saying Civilian Deaths
Break Our Hearts, War Is Not the Answer, and Not in Our Names. Many grannies will dress in white shirts with large blue
peace doves.

Since 2006, the Grannies for Peace vigil has been part of a global movement to stand for peace on Mother’s Day, following
the appeal of Sharon Medhi’s book, The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering. In Washington, DC, Code Pink will hold a
24-hour vigil across from the White House saying “We will not raise our children to kill another mother’s child.” See
www.StandingWomen.org for this year’s 191 planned events, in 15 nations.

All supporters will be welcome to join the vigil. Grannies for Peace is a project of Women Against War. Information on
Grannies for Peace is available at www.WomenA gainstWar.org or from 518-426-0710.
