The 2017 Skipping Stones Honor Awards: The 25th
Anniversary Edition

By lynmiller-lachmann on 2017-07-24 22:37:31

While the non-profit multicultural children’s magazine Skipping Stones has been
publishing articles, stories, and poetry for 29 years, the Skipping Stones Honor Awards are only this year celebrating their
25th anniversary of highlighting the best children’s books and educational resources about diverse cultures around the world
and nature and the environment. With this silver anniversary year, the magazine has recognized 25 winners, a few more than
usual, and the list appears in the June-September 2017 issue. The Skipping Stones website, www.SkippingStones.org,
features annotations of all the winning books and teaching resources. The books come from both major publishers and small
presses, and one of the most useful features of the Skipping Stones list is that all books have an equal chance regardless of
the size of the publisher or their marketing budget as long as the author or publisher enters the books. And the magazine
waives the entry fee for publishers under a certain size, in this way inviting books to be considered that often don’t receive
the attention they deserve elsewhere. While I’d like to see more international books in translation enter and make the list —
hint, hint for all those publishers specializing in translation — these books offer important perspectives on human experience
and the natural environment around the world. For each category, the list is arranged from youngest to oldest readers:
