Each year I eagerly await the announcement of the Skipping Stones Honor Awards—
the multicultural and environmental children’s magazine’s list of the best books of the previous year for children, teens, and
educators. What makes the Skipping Stones list so special is that small presses and the growing number of self-published
titles are considered on a level playing field. All it takes is a small entry fee, waived if the publisher or author cannot afford
to pay, and a committee of parents, teachers, and librarians in the Eugene, Oregon area debates the entries and puts together
the list. The 2012 list includes 25 books and one DVD in three categories—Multicultural and International Books, Nature
and Ecology Books, and Teaching and Parenting Resources. Two of the winners, Laura Resau and Maria Virginia
Farinango’s The Queen of Water and Larry Dane Brimmer’s Black and White, were featured in “Waging Peace” last year. So
here’s the list. Happy reading! Multicultural and International Books: Brimmer, Larry Dane. Black & White: The
