Drones Quilts Tell Stories of Civilian Victims
By maudeaster on 2014-10-17 11:47:01
Did you ever see the AIDS Quilt Display? I did, and its moving commemorations of those whose lives had been cut short
by this terrible disease reached my heart. Seeing it helped me think about each loss of life and what we needed to do as a
country to end these deaths. In the same spirit, a new, nationally circulating, Drones Quilt Project
remembers the civilians killed around the world by US drone strikes. Women Against
War is bringing this powerful exhibit to the Capital District, starting next Monday, Oct. 20, for a month-long series of
displays in 3 area locations (details below). In this coming week, there will be a dramatic project launch event at noon on
Monday, Oct 20th on the steps of the Well of the Legislative Office Building, with 20 women in black sharing the story of
lives lost in Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan and Somalia, holding the quilts and photos of civilian victims, with a large model
drone on display to symbolize the source of the terror in the sky for those below. Maureen Aumand, coordinator of this
project, will speak about the importance of our all finding a way to end these deaths. Everyone is welcome. Whether you can
come to the opening ceremony or not, find a time to see these quilts. There will be a table with
fabric and materials so that you yourself can make a square to be part of an additional quilt as the display grows around the
country.
