Dear Friend,

Congratulations and welcome to Kentucky’s General Assembly. This
is to introduce you to the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty,
an organization whose members you will be seeing frequently during the
coming legislative session.

In this session we intend to do away with the ancient practice of the
state killing people. That’s right — we are going to join the civilized world
and abolish the death penalty. Over sixty percent of Kentuckians will
applaud such action as you will learn when you see the enclosed poll of
Kentuckians.

We have plenty of ways to punish those who use violence to solve
their problems without our adding to the violence. Society can be well
protected, the state can save lots of money, and we can join many states and
the rest of the western world by eliminating this barbaric practice. Some of
the Commonwealth Attorneys won’t like it because they use the threat of the
death penalty as leverage in plea bargaining, but most of the rest of us will
rejoice.

We are enclosing a complimentary copy of The Second Grave, a noted
book on violence in Kentucky that will give you all the facts about the death
penalty. We are also enclosing a review of a new book that tells stories about
what some of your cohorts are up to in the state legislature. We urge you to
pick up a copy at the gift shop in the capitol.

If we can be of help during the session please give us a call and we’ll
be looking forward to seeing you.

With best regards,

oy, Aeled asst
