DEATH PENALTY TO END IN MARYLAND; 6™ STATE IN SIX YEARS TO
ABANDON IT
March 15, 2013
Maryland legislators have sent a bill abolishing the death penalty to
Governor O'Malley for his signature. O’Malley asked for the bill and is certain
to sign. This will bring to 18 the number of states no longer engaged in the
execution of prisoners.
“With 6 states abandoning its use in the past 6 years,” said Rev. Patrick
Delahanty, chairperson of the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death
Penalty, “it is time for Kentucky lawmakers to consider repealing the law
here. As the recent study of Kentucky’s system showed, it is a broken
system, prone to mistakes, and expensive to operate.”
A recent article in the State Journal featured Ben Griffith, a murder victim
family member and Board member of KCADP, who urgently advocates for an
end to the practice in Kentucky. This mirrors what happened in Maryland
where the effort to repeal had significant support from the family members
of murder victims, in addition to others from the law enforcement community
and faith organizations.
Rep. Carl Rollins and Sen. Gerald Neal had both introduced repeal bills in the
recent session of the Kentucky General Assembly. “We hope to see hearings
on abolition in the Joint Interim Judiciary Committee before the 2014 session
begins next January,” Delahanty said. “Days like this remind us it is only a
matter of ‘when,’ not ‘if’ Kentucky will abolish it.”
