MADP UPDATE
May 1, 2013
Before our board meeting on Friday please read this update.
1. Personnel changes:

Beth Hornberger resigned from the board, citing an increased workload.
Sr. Kathie Uhler, OSF, completed her service to CMN as office manager on April
11, 2013.
Emile Netzhammer notified the Sr. Helen that he plans to retire from MADP.
effective June 30, 2013.
2. DePaul University:

In a previous update (February 15, 2013) it was noted that Helen had begun
conversation with DePaul University regarding establishing Project Managers for
various projects she mentioned at our board meeting last November.
i. Random House has agreed to publish a 20" anniversary edition of Dead_
Man Walking. Desmond Tutu, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Helen
have added either a forward or afterword. Publication is scheduled for
mid-June, 2013.
ii. Discussions have continued at DePaul. The department of Mission and
Values has warmly and enthusiastically embraced the concept of a
Project Manager to forward marketing of the 20" anniversary edition. An
agreement between DePaul and MADP has been developed, reviewed
and signed. The position has been posted, candidates interviewed and a
project manager chosen. Helen procured a donation of $36,000 to fund
this Project Manager for one year.
DePaul is poised to add a Project Manager for the Play Project. Helen was at
DePaul for a week (April 18-25). Tim Robbins participated in DePaul activities
during this time including a meeting with the Department of Mission and Values.
An agreement that includes DePaul, MADP and Tim Robbins is being developed.
Funding for this position is yet to be determined. There is an expectation that it
will come from MADP. Once funding is determined the position will be posted.
DePaul would like Greg to come to Chicago for an information transfer so none
of his work is lost including all communication with schools for the 2013-14
school year. It is anticipated that this position will be filled in July.
i. DePaul will provide office space, phone, computer, internet, etc. and
access to department resources for advice, etc. (Theater, Development,
marketing, web design, peace and justice, etc.). A staff member of the
ii. DePaul administration and leadership is very open to incorporating these
kinds of projects that they believe not only fit but enhance DePaul’s
mission. DePaul will not however provide a salary or the expenses of the
project. It is clearly stated in the agreement if these finances are not
provided from outside sources the project will come to a screeching halt.
c. Helen has requested that Rose Vines be paid $10,000 plus travel expenses to
work with and oversee the Project Managers. (This is an agenda item for our
meeting.)
3. Catholic Mobilizing Network
a.
The book Where Justice and Mercy Meet subtitle: Catholic Opposition to the
Death Penalty was released by Liturgical Press in January, 2013. It is written by
faculty members at Mt. St. Mary’s University. 10% of the proceeds from sales go
to CMN. The faculty has recently agreed to begin working on another book on
the topic of Restorative Justice.
In March Karen Clifton, while looking for a replacement for Sr. Kathie Uhler, met
a woman whose qualifications, in Karen’s opinion, would make her a perfect
COO for Catholic Mobilizing Network. The organization would greatly benefit
having the right person in this position. CMN continues to grow and is doing
great work.
Karen developed a position description for a Chief Operating Officer and sent a
request to the Executive Committee to hire this person. Salary and benefits
would amount to something in the neighborhood of $65,000.00. (Karen herself
should be earning more that this amount, but continues to work gratis.)
|. The Congregation of St. Joseph offered CMN $50,000 this year as a matching
grant. CMN has not raised this amount to date. It is likely the Congregation will
give the funds anyway, but an opportunity has been missed here.
On March 25 the Executive Committee met with Karen. Though the need is great
and the position appropriate, her request was denied based on MADP’s lack of
financial resources and the unknown expectations of financial commitments for
2013-14.
The Executive Committee had a very healthy conversation and has raised some
good questions for board discussion related to support of activities under the
umbrella of MADP. You will receive these questions with the board agenda.
4. Emile Netzhammer
a.
Emile first sent his notice of retirement on March 26. He included a description
of his activities. As of now no progress has been made on a replacement.
b. With a 20" anniversary edition of Dead Man Walking being published it is not
clear what will happen to the 10,600 copies of Dead Man Walking currently in a
warehouse in Louisiana. It is unlikely that these books will be mixed with the new
edition at Helen’s speaking engagements.
c. Inthe past MADP purchased 25,000 copies of DMW for $1.00 each and sold
them at Helen’s speaking engagements for a $15.00 donation. This income from
the sale of books is critical to the MADP budget.
d. It is not clear who will be responsible for providing the new edition of DMW
books at Helen’s speaking engagements (probably Random House), who sells the
books, collects the money, returns the unsold books, etc. These funds would go
to Random House, not MADP; MADP does not own copies of the new edition
and is not in a position to purchase a large quantity of them
