Senator Neal Files Bill to Abolish Death Penalty
State Sen. Gerald Neal filed Senate Bill 77 to abolish the death penalty. SB 77 is assigned to the
S. Judiciary Committee where it is unlikely to get a hearing. However, continuing to educate the
public and legislators remains of utmost importance. And we are working on several fronts to do
that.
Most important of all is that your State Senator and State Representative hear from you. Your
opinion, your thoughts, your contact with these two elected lawmakers is critical if we are to
achieve success in Kentucky. Our outreach coordinator, Shekinah Lavalle, and any of our volunteer
Board members are ready to help you. KY ACLU staffer Kate Miller is available, as is Pat
Delahanty, who chairs the Coalition.
Coming to Frankfort to see them or visiting them when they are back home are equally effective,
and we want to make it easy for you to do this. We have materials and personnel to help. Please
let us know your availability and willingess to meet with your legislators by clicking on this

To help legislators understand that many victims' family members do not support the State's use of
the death penalty in their names, several of them have told us their stories. This booklet of
their stories, , was mailed to all of Kentucky's State Legislators. To see what they received,

execution for those who murdered their loved ones.
We expect to see another bill introduced to abolish the death penalty in the KY House of
Representatives. As soon as that happens we will alert you so you can be talking to lawmakers
about both of these bills.

Not In Our Names: Victims' Family Members Speak Out Against the Death Penalty
A forum sponsored by Berea Friends Meeting, Union Church, and St Clare Catholic Church is
featuring two victim family members whose loved ones were murdered: Ben Griffith and Rosalind
Harris. In additon, Shekinah Lavelle, Outreach Coordinator for KCADP, will speak on the current
situation in Kentucky and the status of efforts in the legislature to repeal the death penalty.
Rosalind Harris of Lexington now works on issues related to social justice. Her 18-year-old son,
Jamil, was murdered in Lexington in 1997. Ben Griffith of Frankfort lost his brother Chris to
murder in 1986 in a random act of violence that also took the lives of three others. Rosalind and
Ben will tell the stories of their loved ones lost, and reveal healing steps in their journeys
that informed each of them that the death penalty and exacting revenge perpetuates a violence done
to all of society.
