How does change happen?
When it comes to the death penalty, change happens when more and more people begin
to approach the topic. And, take action. One simple step is getting your faith group
involved in the discussion.
An easy way to get your faith group questioning whether capital punishment has any
place in our modern world is being part of National Weekend of Faith in Action on the
Death Penalty (NWFA). Sponsored by Amnesty International, the annual initiative
scheduled for Oct. 19-21 can be anything you want it to be in your community.
Last year, more than 500 faith groups participated and to get started, Amnesty
International offers a free packet filled with ideas and resources. Typical activities
include hosting speakers, watching films, holding discussions, leading prayers, delivering
sermons, organizing letter-writing campaigns or distributing information on the death
penalty.
KCADP is again available to assist in planning and in offering resources such as a
diverse speakers’ bureau. It is our hope to see activities planned throughout October and
beyond.
This year, NWFA is offering a free copy of the DVD “Race to Execution” for those who
register. Originally broadcast on PBS in March, this film explores how race
discrimination infects our death penalty system, focusing on the cases of Robert Tarver of
Alabama and Madison Hobley in Illinois.
