Meeting: July 13, 2015
Present: Mike Janocik, Alan Pickett, Faye Roche, Sr. Dorothy Schuette, Andrew Vandiver, Pat Delahanty
Purpose: planning for legislative visits by Catholic and maybe some other constituents with four legislators whose
position on the death penalty was unknown to KCADP.
Documents containing the names of persons on the Voter Voice list of the Catholic Conference who live in the
legislative districts of Rep. Brian Linder, Rep. Diane St. Onge; Rep. Mike Denham and Sen. Chris McDaniels were
distributed. Fr. Delahanty explained that those on this list may be inclined to meet with legislators, as well as others who
can be identified because of their work with the pro-life office of the diocese.
It turns out that Rep. St. Onge did meet with someone recently from KCADP and expressed concerns about cost. She is
more concerned about legal issues, than religious reasons. She asked if those receiving life without parole would have
less chance of proving innocence (if they were) because of a difference in the availability of appeals to them.
Sr. Dorothy also said she had met (I think 2 years ago) and he was supportive of the death penalty.
Fr. Delahanty emphasized that the desired result for these meetings with constituent who are Catholic is to make clear to
legislators that this is an issue of importance to Catholics and that we really want their help in advancing efforts to win
repeal of the death penalty.
Other conversation led to discussions about the upcoming visit of Sr. Helen Prejean to Kentucky. Faye is working to
create an event with Thomas More and Northern KY University and will be getting back to Fr. Pat about that.
Because of the politically conservative nature of the area, everyone felt the Knights of Columbus document would be
helpful. And following up on Mike Janocik comments about conservatives concerned about the death penalty, Andrew
intends to find a few people who will agree to become a Northern KY CCATDP "chapter."
Alan and Faye will be working together with pro-life directors? at an upcoming meeting to bring greater awareness to
the work of Catholic Charities and social justice issues.
Alan and Faye will be discussing the meeting with Bishop Foys to be sure he is kept in the loop about these plans. It
may be that down the road, when we move to identifying other legislators with whom to have conversations, then
Bishop Foys would be asked if he could meet with a few.
We would all like to see Bob Greene become part of this action plan due to his long history of involvement in other
prolife issues, his past as a judge, and because he is a man many legislators know and respect.
Andrew and Alan both had some other names of people who might be politically influential and Andrew is feeling some
of them out on the possibility the would become involved.
Please add anything you wish to these notes and send them back to me and I will make a final document recording
today's meeting. Let me know what I've missed and if you've had an additional thought or two, send that along for
everyone's consideration.
Again, thank you so much for coming today. I was really happy with the conversation and the energy that is being
generated on the issue.
Peace, God's blessings on your work,
Pat
