MEETING WITH VI MILLER, SECRETARY, CABINET FOR FAMILIES AND
CHILDREN, OCTOBER 8, 2002

Jane Chiles and I met with Secretary Miller to discuss the Kevin Stanford case and
sought her help in approaching the governor to grant clemency.

Secretary Miller listened carefully to what we said, made extensive notes and had some
questions: a] did I know Kevin and what is he like; b] how about survivors of the Baerbel
Poore.

I told her that I did not know him well, but that he is significantly different today at 38
than he was at 17; that he is married; that he has matured; that he is religious. I said the
only survivor I knew about had been outspoken in the morning CJ (I gave her a copy of
the article) and I did tell her she has a daughter and that I would speak to his attorneys
about other surviving family members.

Secretary Miller referred to her background in special education and said she would
speak to Crit Luallen today at a meeting to begin the conversation about recommending
that the administration, the governor, not execute Kevin Stanford.

1am to keep her informed about the legal progress of the case so she can know when is
the best time for her to insert herself into this process. She is more than willing to help us
with this matter and seems to think the governor will be helpful.
