KCADP Board Meeting
March 10, 2014

Present: Ray Schweri, Maria Hines, Pat Delahanty, Stephanie Wurdock, Alvin
Seales, Kate Mudd, Ben Griffith, Richard Mitchell, Mark Meade, and Shekinah Lavelle

Regrets: Kaye Gallagher, Kate Miller, Chris Beckett, Don Vish, and Don Stern

1. Future Meeting Notices. Ben agreed to take over the duty of sending out
announcements of meetings to the Board. Notices will be emailed 10 days prior to
arranged meeting times.

2. Minutes from December 2013. Minutes were approved as written. Board
members appreciated receiving the minutes prior to this evening’s meeting. Ben
will attach minutes to meeting notices in the future.

3. Treasurer’s Report. The report contained many questions for the Board and as
such, the Board could not accept the report. Pat agreed to check with Kaye and ask
for a corrected version. He will try to get this corrected version sent out to the
Board.

4. Legislative Update. Pat reported that there are 5 bills introduced in this session
dealing with the death penalty. Abolition bills in both the House and Senate, a bill to
address concerns of the ABA Death Penalty assessment, a Senate resolution to study
the cost of the Death Penalty, and a House resolution to study the Edwin Chandler
case. A number of good visits have been conducted by Kate Mudd, Kate Miller,
Shekinah, Randy Wheeler, murder victim family members, and wrongly convicted
persons. There has been a noticeable positive response overall. A member of both
the House and Senate Judiciary Committees will be pursuing hearings in between
sessions. Rep. David Floyd has created a new movement among conservatives with
his bill and op-eds. The news conference announcing abolition bills in both the
Senate and House was an amazing event that was well attended by the media. In the
coming week Sabrina Butler will be back in state for Witness to Innocence. Pat
reported that Kirk Bloodworth, the first exoneree from Innocence Project, will be
sent to Kentucky by Witness to Innocence sometime in the coming year. Marc
Hayden, Equal Justice USA, will be bringing a booth to the Young Americans for
Liberty conference in Lexington on April 5. This is a good chance to build some local
libertarian/conservative support for abolition. Kate Mudd is approaching the Social
Worker group with education on Abolition and hopes to sway the group to spend
their lobby day next year on Death Penalty issues. Sister Helen Prejean is coming
back in October. A number of events, meet and greets, and fundraising will be
arranged around her visit. Berea Quakers have been making regular trips to lobby
and were instrumental in getting Rita Smart to be a co-sponsor. As all these
activities suggest, there is a momentum building in our state.
5. Media Consulting. Bob Gray and Diana Taylor, very experienced media
consultants, have agreed to work as our media consultants for the coming year.
Details of the agreement will be worked out Wednesday at a meeting with Pat, Kate
Miller, Shekinah, and Ben (maybe others?). Once this agreement is in place and the
media plan is threshed out, Pat will send the outline of this proposed media thrust
to the Board. Again, the very fact that Taylor Gray has agreed to take this on
indicates that there is some hope that the political environment exists for abolition
to stand a chance.

6. Fundraising. Board members are encouraged to keep thinking of ways to raise
money. Mark suggested a “Day of the Dead” party aimed at young professionals on
Nov 2. There was a flurry of ideas around this. Other fundraising ideas were
discussed as well. Pat suggested that a previously formed Finance Committee be
called into action.

7. Education. Kate suggested that we try to get ourselves onto the convocation
programs at the different colleges and universities in the state. Some of these places
require students to attend so many on the convocations, and there would be a good
receptive and captive audience. Kate and Shekinah will start looking into these
possibilities.

8. Meeting Calendar for 2014. Please put the following dates into your calendar:

June 9, 2014
September 8, 2014
December 8, 2014.

The meeting was adjourned at 8 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ben Griffith, Secretary
