Dear Nora:

We were sorry recently to learn that mother had been ill at her
90th birthday, and we hope that she has recovered from the flu
in the meantime which also had prevented Ate and Walter from
attending her birthday. We are certain that the care of mother
is a very heavy burden for you, but we are certain that you are
not neglecting her. We did not expect to have any lengthy
letters from you under these circumstances but if your time
permits we would very much like to hear about you all and about
Nicole's social work studéés at Philadelphia.

Please give mother our belated congratulationa and our very
best wishes to you all.

AIR MAIL

Mrs. Nora Hackel
3242 Cambridge
Bronx, New York 10463

Deer Nora:

Thank you very much for your letter of April 3. I was very sorry to
learn that your dear mother has been 111 for the last month and it's
good that your sister from London has come to help you in nursing
your mother. I hope that by now her health has improved and I want
you to tell her that Li and I are wishing her full recovery.

From Hilde I hed already heard that our friend Ella had been seriously
ill and had written her at the hospital. I received fairly good
letters from her after a short time, but I learned just now that it
was necessary for her to trensfer to another hospital and that she

had to have a serious operation. Fortunately, that seems to have been
successful and I understand that she is slowly recovering but will
have to stay in the hospital for some time. She sent me word through
Jeanne Bauer that she regrets that she is unable to attend the Child
Welfare Conference in Rothenburg in May and she had asked whether I
could go to that Conference. This is, however, impossible since I
have to complete the translation of Introduction to Social Welfare
before we leave for Europe in the end of June. This answers your
question about our plans for the summer. Unfortunately, we had to
take, for financial reasons, a charter flight from here to Amsterdam
so that we are unable to stop on the way either in the Mid-West or

in New York.

We were very glad to hear that Nicole is enjoying her study at the
School of Social Work. I can well appreciate that Nicole participates
in the student movement, but since she likes her study and the faculty,
I sincerely hope she will not join the destructive, vandalistic troap
among the students who do more harm than they help progress. We had
at our University substantial problems in this respect during the last
quarter but at present this trouble seems to be over at least for some
time.

I agree with you that a good deal of the demands of students and of the
Black community were justified and changes should be made, but I do not
feel that terror actions, bombings and explosions are the best way of
improving our society.

Mrs. Nora Hackel -2- April 23, 1969

You ask about Dorothy. She and her family are well though: Dorothy has
a tremendous amount of work after she was promoted to Administrative
Director of her mental health clinic in addition to her job as Chief

Psychologist. She is now organizing a hospital unit for residential
treatment at her clinic.

Li joins with me in very best wishes to you, your mother and Marianne.

Cordially yours,

Walter Friedlander

Dear Nora:

received his memoirs under the title Carried Away. You will remember him from our
common work in the Child Welfare Department in Berlin. His book is very brilliantly
written and contains a great number of interesting chapters about his many successes

late and did not really participate in the full development of our services, I
wanted to tell you these few facts in case some of our common friends are asking

Li and I hope that you are reasonably well and we wonder whether you are planning
to travel again this year to Europe to visit your friends and your sister.

Cordiaily yours,

Walter Friedlander,

Dear Nora,

I have to apologize if I answer to your good letter without
date in English, but after my 90th birthday, I have such a
tremendous load of inquiries that I can no longer write in German.

I was very interested about your decision to move to the Home
in which Marianne and your daughter were helping you. I understand
very well that you have decided to remain in Croton. In fact,

I had faced a similar decision 2 1/2 years ago before my daughter
came to join me from Washington, D.C.

All the details you are writing about your new arrangements
sound very fortunate, and I am glad to learn that you have enjoyed
the woods with their beautiful Fall colors. I resret. however,
that you were infected with poison ivy. I remember well that this
happened to me many years ago here in the neighborhood of Berkeley
when I did not watch going with several friends to the mountains.

Since I‘m over 90 now, I cannot pretend that you with 80 are
already old. I share with you your regret about the miserable
conditions in Berlin after the last elections. I was glad, however,
to hear from you about several other friends in Germany of whom
I didn't have any information for quite some time, and I'm sorry
that your letter to me took you until midnight. You should really
use that time for a good sleep!

My daughter returns your kind regards, and I will not expect
quick answers from you since I know that without the fine help I
have at the faculty, correspondence is extremely difficult. If
you write again to Marrianne, please give her my regards, and my
very best wishes to you.

Dear Nora,

I was sorry to learn from your letter of February 22 that life
in your condominium gets difficult for you. I know well that you had
been active and intelligent and interested in social work all the time
during the years you were in New York. I am sorry that you have
difficulties now, which I understand very well since I am in a similar
condition. I doubt that any books give us help when we are getting
ye, and I do not know of any special medicaments which can do this
either.

Of course I know that the climate in New York is less beneficial
than our here in California. You ask for my daughter--for two or
three years she has been living with me (after her divorce) and takes
good care of her old father. I gave her your greetings, and I wish
you further good recovery and, if possible, more frequent visits from
your daughter.

When you say that you cannot, with 80 years, learn any more in
the company of about 200 other patients in your home, I wonder what
I Bhould say with 90 years! I wish you very good recovery from your
arthritis, and I hope that your expectation that in summer you will
have more friends joining you and will feel better occurs.

Marianne has written me some time ago of her visit with you and
that she helped you in the last move of your furniture. I can answer
your question whether I am in medical treatment that is satisfactory,
and I wish you the very best full life in the new settina.

Sincerely,
