COMMITTEE TO AID THE BLOOMINGTON STUDENTS
PO Box 213, Cooper Station
New York 3, New York

Dear Friend:

I would like to bring to your attention a matter in which
I believe you would be interested, It concerns the vital
area of student civil liberties and academic freedom,

On July 28, three Indiana University students were re-
indicted in Bloomington under Indiana's 1951 Communism
Act, a harsh sedition law passed at the height of the
McCarthy era and as yet untested in the courts, Ralph
Levitt, University Fellow, 26; James Bingham, 25; and
Tom Morgan, 22, all native Hoosiers, now face prison
sentences of up to six years on the two counts, A full
account of the case is enclosed.

This “Hoosier Witehhunt', to quote IU Professor Norwood
Hanson's trenchant description in the enclosed reprint

of his May 25 NATION article, has aroused the gravest
concern in the academic community, Already, many profess~
ors have become sponsors of the Committee To Aid The
Bloomington Students to demonstrate their opposition to
the witchhunt and their support for freedom of speech,

I would like to ask you to become a sponsor of the Comm-
ittee To Aid The Bloomington Students. You would be
listed among supporters on our letterhead and on future
nation-wide publications we may issue on the case (see
enclosed brochure). In a very brief period of time we
have secured quite a few names. Won't you add yours

by signing the enclosed sponsor's consent card, You can
send it to us at the above address,

Due to the immense legal costs, we also welcome monetary
contributions so that we can keep up the fight for freedom
of speech, Please send your contribution to the:
Committee To Aid the Bloomington Students at the above
addvess, Checks can be made out to either the Committee
or myself, We hope that you will be able to help us

keep these three students out of jail by contributing

as generously as possible.

Thanking you for any aid you can give us,

Very truly yours,

y ¢
