Dear Dr. Johnson:
Since I understand that there is a prespect that Karl
Mannheim may be invited to join the faculty of the Rew School I wish to
convey to you my conviction that Mennhein would make a distinctive scholarly
contribution as a member of your faculty. His remarkable discernment,
his grasp of the greater issues underlying historica: movements and tne
abiiliy to restate and reinterpret from the mental oroblems of present day
society have been exemplified in 4 series of important contributions.
He is without doubt one of the most dmrortant figures in the line of seclo-
logical theory. I know also from his students that he 1s an attractive
and stimulating teacher. Personally I have been so impressed by his quality
that last year I invited hia to seend some weeke with our students under
@ echeme we have for temporary visits from distinguished outsiders. He
was unable te accept and I renewed the invitation for the coming yoar.
I would be very happy if it were porsible to have the close association
with him which membership of your faculty would assure.
Siacerely yours,
