Res KAEIHE VORDIPIEDE
Dear ‘r. Yordtiriede:
With reference to the case of your mother,
irs. Kaethe Vordtiede, who is now ia Switzerland, we
wish to teil you that should this Coumittee decide that
the case of your mother comes into our category, end if
application is made for a Special Visitor's Visa, we
want you to know that the application made for ewigra~
tion viss in 1958 would be cancelled.
In view of the fact that her cuota number
may be coming up within a short time, it seems unwise
to make the application fur the Special Visitor's Visa
which will automaiically cause her to lose her place
on the quota. sur organization is not set up to inter-
vene for any other visas but Special Emergency Visitor's
Visas.
It is possible to make application for
Special Visitor's Visas to the United States for a limited
number of oulsvending refugees who would be in grave dan-
ger if caught by tie Nazis due to their known enti-
Nazi activities.
We shall swait your reply in the matter,
Sincerely yours,

Dear Miss Loeb,
I find that I sent the biography of my mother which you
were kind enough to ask for to the Fr@énds of German Freedom
(Miss Anna Caples). But they told me that they had forwarded
it to youe Please excuse my delaying things that way.
As you will find from the biographical sketch my mother wrote
an extensive work describing bota her political experience and
hem personal history under Hitler. Tne manuscript is, as you
see, in Cambridge, Mass. ego the Committee that sponsored the
competition. These are the Professors Gordon W. Allport (Psy-
chology), Sidnay B. Fay (History), Edward Y¥. Hartsaorne (Socio-
logy). The aadress is: "aerman Life", History Prize Competitaon
Committee, 776 Widener Library, Cambridge, Mass.
I thought that any additional information could be gotten from
there, and that it may be valuable for the case of my mother.
Would you kindly inform me whether the chances for wy mother's
visitor visa have improved in the meanwhile? Her situation becomes
more and more endangered with every single day, since little
Switzerland has a hard herself to % feed her citizens and contem~
plates the sending pack of all refugees who have only a transitory
permission to stay.
I certainly appreciate your kind interest and readiness to
help, and would be very grateful, if you could send me the desired
information. | |

RE: KATHE VORDTRIEDE
Dear Miss Loeb: -
Thank you very much for your letter which I Just
received. You tell me that a second affidavit in addition to my
own is necessary. There is, however, a second affidavit, much
stronger: than mine which I sent to my mother about a year ABO.
Is was given by lir. Charles Fortriede, cigar manufacturer, 220 West
12 th Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Fortriede is 4 cousin of
my mother, and I think that his affidavit will be considered
sufficient. '
Would you please kindly let me know what I have
to do in order to let the President's Advisory Committee know
that this second affidavit has been given andesent over to my
mother? I hesitate to ask Mr. Fortriede to write it once more.
But I think it would be easy to obtain from him a statement con-
firming his financial information which he laid down jn his affi-
davit. Allow me to suggest to you that you on account of your
official capacity write to Mr. Fortriede asking him for such a
confirming statement, in case it is necessary. I shall, of
course, write to hin at the same time in the same manner. You
would certainly oblige me very much by doing so.
Concerning my own confirming statement I assure
you that I shall send it to you very soon. TI 4m enclosing in this
letter: 1, two copies of an offic:ial transcript of the
State Bank and Trust Company of Evanston, Ill.
2. a letter of the Fifth Third Union Trust Co. in

for my mother through Barclay's Bank in New York.
3. a letter of the University of Cincinnati about
the position I held there last year.
I shall send you my confirming stutenent as soon
&s possible and hope to receive from you some information in the
Fortriede affidavit matter. ©

It would be necessery for him to moke
apolicetion directly to the American Consul abroad. For
this purpose of course he vould have to huve the necessery
documents IN his possession.
If you want us to make an ppplication
for him, should he come into the category of people for
whom we can ask for a Special Visa, we would also have to
have the necessary documents on hand. Unfortunately, there
is no other vay out of the situation.

Dear Miss Loeb:
You had the great kindness to tell me in your last
letter of February 19 th that you were going to write on behalf
of my mother to Mr. Charles Fortriede. Thank you very much.
May I ask you what was the result of it? I am sure
that Mr. Fortriede is very glad to do what you were asking. Only
he probably does not know very well how to do all that in the right
way.
I should appreciate it very much if you were so kind
as to tell me whether you received the affidavit alreday from hin,
and whether thereby all necessary steps are taken for bringing my
mother over here.
Very sincerely yours, .

PS. A friend of mine, Dr. Heinz Zimmermann, who before the downfall
of France had joined the French Foreign Legion writes to me in great
despair. He is now in Varocco where he evidently nidea both from
the Germans and from the French. He lives in the Arabian Bled near
Casablanca tozeber witn his wife and child and implores me to do
something for nim which would enable nim to come to America. I have,
of course, no "Biography" from him. Can I do something for him?
You would oblige me very much by telling me what I can do.

Dear Miss Loeb:-
Thank you very much. for your letter of May Othe After tyvo un
successfull attempts I finally managed to get another affidavit. It would .
disappointment to me, if this affidevit, too, proves to be ~en-
sufficient. The signer 33 an Associate Professor at Northwestern University.
In case his salary of 5200.00 3 a year is not enough, could we not take Mr.
Simmons! affidavit together with that of Professor Schilpp as & joint effi-
davit? Those two affidavits together with the 5000.00% which are to my mother's
disposal (ca. 4000.00 » jn this country end 1000.00 * in England) should certain-
ly be enough for a guarantee, especially; since my mother possesses the af-
Pidevit of Mr. Charles Fortriede who is a well-to-do cigar manufacturer and
house-ovmere
I trust that, if this affidavit now closes the matter, you
will act as cuickly as possible to inform the President's Adviseory Commites
about the situation. If I can ever be of any assistance to you and your
work, please, do not hesitete to ask me, for I em greatly indebted to yOUe

I thank you very much for your last communication
which sounded so nopeiul. Please, forgive me that I trouole

of my mother's case. I certainly appreciate all you have done

time. there is, or course, a chance, that this permit of my

RE: KATHE VORDTRIEDE
Dear Miss Loeb:
After your letter of June 23rd I was convinced that the
difficulties in the visa affair for my mother were definitely over.
I was, nowever, very? Snocked to get a letter from my mother in which
she tells me that the Consul in Zurich, Switzerland, speaks of new
requirements. Here is what he wrote to my mother:
"Curich, July 15 Reference is made to your recent inquiry
regarding the possipility or obtaining a visa for entry into the
United States. You wre intormed that under the new visa regulations,
eiiective July i, 1941, two of your sponsors in the United States
should communicate with the Department of State, Vasnington,).t.,
and request Forms B and D from the Department. After your sponsors
have completed the forms, tney should return them to the Departre nt
of State for consideration. The Department will then communicate with
tuis Consulate Gere ral concerning your case. No action can be taken
on your application until the receipt by this Uonsui General or word
‘from the Department, at which time you will be intormed."
© Now, I am sure you would have uniormed me, in case new regu-
lations not yet observed by us had come out. Ir tnis concerns the
reguifation that no one can enter the United States who still has close
relatives in German occupied countries, tnen it does nov at all apply
to my mother: all her brothers and sisters are in America and ralestiue
and ner two cnildren are in America and England.
But, if there is really a new regulation which caiis itor all
this long-winded action, could it not be done that way that we send
tne Forms B and D directly to the Vonsulate?
Please, tell me imnearateiy wnat I have to do and how it can be
done in the snortest possible time. You vertainly woyld oblige me
very much by doling tnat.
My motner nad vo change uer address in the meanwhile; her new
address is: Kloster Kartnause, cfo Uolonei ¥ehr, Thurgau, Switzerland.
I am, or course, ready to pay tor any cable sent to ine vonsul
in Zurich, ir that can help matters.
Thanking you in advance, I remajn

Dear Wr. Vordtriede}
I received your letter of July 30th.
The information which your mother obtsined from the congul
in Zurich is not quite incorrect inasmuch 2s eince thet
time instructions have been given to the consulates con-
cerned to fssue the visa rroviding a statement regarding
the relatives is satisfactory.
However, I think that you will do
better is you let us have a statement in triplicate,
. two copies to be notarized, which will cover the there
abouts of all close relatives of the visa avplicant.
If there are any relatives in Germany
or German occupied territories, the statement should
contain information about the kind and frequency of the
contacts which the visa applicant had vith her relatives
and include whatever other circumstances may seem per-
tinent,
; I cannot see any reason why the visa
Would not be granted after they receive the necessary
