Tow ohildren, ono 9 ycars, the other 6 months old.

J have known Robert “Keller and hia wife ainoe ioak, and have been their persona
friend singe then. Both Mr. and re. Keller are peraons of the finest characters
They havo been politically agtive since their youth, and have always fought with all
their atrength for a dexocratio and republican Germany. they were olways highly
thought of because of their maolfish ohareater, and their sense of dutye through
their fearless:ond ceaseless work againat German National Soolaliam before and after
1933 they belong, undoubtedly, te the group of poeple whos’ liberty and life 4a in

%.

From my own knowledge and with fell conviction ee an able to say the following
about Robert Keller's _Aevelopmon tt + 4

From agg ONy Ke was sétive in the *Jangeoulaliettscho Vereinigung’ which formed
®& part of the Gorman Social Democratic Party. Tho. task. of this organization waa
to win the German youth for Demecrasy and the Welmar Republic, and it dndluded
the members of the Social Demowratio Pariiy betwoon 20 and 25 years. Ke was a membor
of the National Oommittes; he was a publié speaker and propagandist, and Sollaborator
of the nonthly periodidal "Jungsoziealiatische Dluattor." ue

Through thio nobtivity he game to the attention of the Executive Committee of the
Social Democratic Party. At that time we were looking for young people who possessed
the personal and intellestual qualifications for a furthor training as functionaries
in the labor movement. On my suggestion Ke got a job in the bureau of the Soojal
Menocratic Reichstag group which was under my supervision, He worked with us for
about a yeare “My opinion of Keller's cheracter ahd abilities which I mentioned aber
was justified during this collaborations

After Kollor had finished thie training he got @ job in the bureau of the Social
Demoorstic Farty in Kiel. Whon, in 1928, I became a Wik candidate for the Reichatag
elections in the district of Holle I asked Keller to help me, He complied with ny
wish and took over the organizational conduct, at first only for e part of this
aistriat, the industrial region of Zieleben, ond later on for the whole distriat
of Halle. This was a very diffioult job whioh required not only a good deal of
knowledge but also personal courage, Halle is a part of the large middle Gorman
industrial area where the *LeunaeWerk* of the IQ Farben AG. and numerous other
important defense industries are located. The Social Democratic Party was come
paratively weak in this eleoteral distrist, the Communists and Notional Socialista
on the other hand were very atrong. It was mainly due to Keller's efforts that the
Social Denooratia Party gained some ground in this and the following yearg.

In 1932 and 1933 political activity for the HMULSI Sooial Demogratio Party
moont inmedinte pergonal danger. In almost every meeting there wore serious fights

‘in which very often some people were so badly wounded that they died. In Pebruary 1933,

when he cane home from a meeting, Keller was atteeked by National Secialista; hia

sobive in the dafense from this aasault. He had, therefore, to ghve up hia home,
and to eacsape because the polioe did not proteot him any mores

Qaring the last months of his stay in Germany, in the apting and summer of 19335
Meller founded and lef an illegal (underground) Sodial Demooratie group with the
nome “Roter Stosstrupp". Its members were young and active Social Democrats who in
spite of the breakdown of the old Soglal Demooratio Farty were anxious to contribute
to the defeat of the National Socialist dictatorship, and to the restoration of
democracy in Germanys Upon request of his frienie Keller loft Germeny and wont
abroad in order to oxgenias help for this vorke In September 1953, or about that
tine, he went to Greososlovakia.s There he took residence only a fow miles away
from the Germanbordar eo that the sommunication with his friends and tha distriot
of Halle was feoilitated. Keller finonced hie projest from hia own means; he hed
made an inheritance of about 10.000 Heichamark. He gave wost of this soney for the
underground work, He never got any vemumeration for his work. The many trials
against the members of the "Roter Stosstrupp", end the heavy sentences tell the

story of the effestivensss of their work. In every trial the Gestapo mentioned that

Kellor was really tho person most gauilty.e 48 a result, he wae deprived of hie
German citizenship. (See "Deutacher Reithsanzeiger® #22 of. January 27,1938)

I just learned thet an emergency visa has been granted to Robert
-Keller and his family.

Keller who is now living in France without any meens has no
relatives in the United States who could be approached with
the requast to help him with the fare, Therefore, I ask of the
po Emergency Rescue Committee to give’ the transportation money
. 4 . for Robert Keller, his wife end his two cheildren, ten and one
i years old.

Keller is a highly appreciable person who not only suffered

for his democratic ideals but sugported friends in Germany who
carried on the fight against Hitler when he himself was forced
to leave Germany and, furthermore, helped other refugees in
Czechoslowakia and in Frence asslong as he was able toe

Very sincerely

Liebe Ingrid:

weisen?

Richard Kempfer, %eZt. in’ Marseille.

RE: Robert Keller with family

Deer Miss Loeb;

Please find enclosed my statement in triplicate that you asked
about Mr. Keller and family which covers the whereabouts of all
close relatives. All other indications are to find in the
biography I sent to you last fall.

I should be be very obliged to you if you would let me know
immediately whether this new statement will be recognized as
sufficiemly, for I am very interested in the case of Mr. Keller
and his family. and eager to know if the visa will be issued.

I should be very grateful, too, if you would take care that the
decision of the State Department would be wired to the Consulate
in Marseille.

Wery sincerely yours

Dear Miss Loeb:

Thanks for your Letters of August 5th and 15th.

I wrote to Mr. Wa rren in behelf of Keller's case and asked hin
to give an immediate attention to this case.

I am very sorry to hear that you can't get along with Mr. Bisen-

know his relatives in this country . [ tried to get some informathons
about bis reletives from people formerly living in Koenigsberg,

but nobody could be of any help. Perhaps it would be the best to

to Mr. Cohen asking for his and his wife's familiy deve, ana

I received them a few days ago. Therefore I am able to send you
today the requested statement including the informationa avout

Re: Robert Keller. and familiy:

I should be very grateful to you if you could let me know immediate-~

.ly how the case of Robert Keller is getting along. On September

?th , I approached Mtss Ingred Warburg suggesting to intervene

in his case which I consider es one of the most urgent ones, because

he is in danger to be extradited to the German authorities. Meen-
while, Mr. Keller sent me another letter of August 25th telling
me that tieis of the utmost importance for hin to have the con~
firmation that the transportation is assured and the passages
paid, The Consul in Lyon would not be willing to issue the visas
before having this confirmation shown. Furthermore, Keller has
written thet he learned from liry Fry in Marseille to have sent
several cables asking for Keller's Passage, but until now, he has
not yet received an answer. Please let me hear from you about this
Case as soon as it is possible to you, : .
