. dear sire;

Several of my colleagues here have, thenks to your kindness, just

received visitor's visas for the U.S-4., because of an undertaking concerning
sx Austrian and Gérman writers. My friends in New York have evidently not
heard of this undertaking in time and I was therefore not considered, although
my case is at the moment doubtless an urgent one,

But before I speak of that, may I point out that the followin® persons
among otners can gkvexpraaf vouch for the truth of my claims and also for my
person and my work: Ernst Lothar, New York City, 19 East 88 Street, (The former
Viennese director of Reinhardtbuhnen). furthermore Erwin Piscator, 11 West 81.

fred Georg, editor of the "Aufbau", 15 East 40 Street,
7” “Born in Vienna, April 2, 1887, Twas thers ‘active for 30 years as a

As a result of my Long, well-known by the Vienna public and I may
Say popular attitude, I had to flee Austria already in March 1928, I crossed
the Hungabian border on foot at midnight. From April 1938 on I lived in Paris,
as the correspondent of a Czechoslovakian PEBEP paper, working on several other
papers, as lecturer and press chief, as well as secretary'of the Federation of
Austrian Emigrants. On June lOth, 1940, I had to leave Paris too,
My works on French as well as American culture and literature m can
»\ not only be confirmed by the persons named above, but my personal friends:
Franz Werfel, Stefan Zweig,’ Alfred Polgar, Elisabeth Bergner, Max Reinhardt,

T need not’ add how essential in saving our lives and how decisive it is at this
\ time for me and my wife to Succeed _in going to the U,8.-with your help, where I
would doubtless be able to get work thn ugh my personal connections.

The data on myself and my wife:

We are both not registered on the quota, because I have counted for

Dear Mr. Lothort

We wrote to you about the faith of Ludwig Ullmann end of August

and you were kind enough to promise to procure affidavits for

him in September,

We have received a cable from our representative in France

on Noy 4th u.ging us to take actions Kr. Ullmann mentioned

Dorctny thom, sen,Max Reinhardt and “arlene Dietrich as his

references. Our representative in France believes that if this

three would back Mr. “limanns application he would be able

to ‘ind financlal assistance for them in the mesncime, and
“financial assistance would probably keep them from being interned.

So wo would verymuch like you to inform us at your earllest
convenience of what you believe could be d.ne in thie metter ,
and if you heve been able to secure any of the necessary papers
for his application so far.

Thank you very much for your letter. I am sorry
the matter was so delayed, but the office has been
closed for a few days.

Wilhelm Herzog has been on our list, and we have
tried to »repare it, but we have not succeeded in getting
an affidavit for him; the same thing is true in the case
of Emil “heinhardt. I am writing to two people Emknum
to try to get an affidavit for them, and Ludwig Ullman, |
I know that lirs. Graefer is already in toueh with’ Try,”
and I will -able to him to ask him to look her up again,

At the same time, 1 will at once write a letter fro
affidavits. :

We need a biography on all of these people, and as
we have nobody that knows them very well, we would be very

grateful if you could send us a short biography showing
why the people are in danger.

gangen ist, was mir Miss Richardson freundlicherweise
mnitteilte.

Ieh waere Ihnen sehr, sehr dankbar, wenn

_ Sie sich weiter der Befreiung dieser zwei armen und

ganz verlassenen Menschen annehmen wuerden, worum Sie

Dear Miss Loeb: ;
The fhalowing are our cases of the week: Dee

sent you 5 nanea but Mr.Tritsch now tells us that he is not atmell
astonished that no one can give affidavits, thonames he gaw being only ©
those of people he vanted mm to use asscientific references. As a matter
of fact he has no relations whe could provide him with an affidavit. The
only relations he has are 1) a brother who was beofre the war in London and
whose address he doas not know end 2) a sister of his wife, Martha Spohn
who is in a Franciscan Convent at St.John School, Rubicon, Wisconsin.

Mr. Tritsch says thet he hes good prospects of obtaining the post of
professor at the Cath HighSchool at St. Francisco, He counts on the
supoort of the president of the above school, Williem Drew, Professor
Hallgarten of Berkeley University (Department of History) and on Dom

- Otto Duke of ‘urtenberg, Dire ctor of the International Help for Catholic

Refugees.

ULEMAN Indviz. You asked us in your 212 to help him. His case ig similer
to that of Helmuth Simons about whom we wrote you in our letter no.197
(Tiftth weekly letter) We assisted him for some time (Zune 25th to November
a4th, 1941) and he receivad from us more than 6.000 Fr. We stopped his
assisiance because his tsa prospects seemed remote, bub we are talcing
him on again on receipt of your cable.

ROLg? Marcot. Mr. Vy will certianly tell you all about this case which is

an old one. We do not know what hor chances are for obtaining an American
visa, but she seems toba expecting to receive her Mexican visa shortly and
she has askued us to sea about the payment of har passage; according to

Miss. Wolff Mr.Fry gava her a definite promise about this when he waa here.

Of course we know that many people say this. But will you in any case consult

. her references and ask thom if they will be realy to pay the passage in case

she obtains the viea.

Dear Miss Loeb:

You told me, a few days ago, that - for ‘the time
being - there was nox more possibility to bring Mr. and Mrs.
Ludwig Ullmann out of Marseille.

Will you please, therefore take care that the money
for Mr. and Mrs. Ullmann's trip is refunded to me in due course. ile
paid the amount of $255 on June 25,1941 and $30 on July 25,1941.

. All the friends of Mr. Ullmann still can't under-
stand, that 1t was not possible, to bring him out.He really was

one of the first and one of the most embittered Nazi enemies. Let's
hope God is going to help him, as we couldn't.

Yours sincerely,

SPGLIOR RESCR 23!

Ingyid Yartorg’
Baceative cectetont

neor: bie

Me Iudwig Ullmann and his wife, both in the early 40's, have applied

for an Emergency Visitor's Visa to the United States. Thus far we have
sponsorship affidavits and a biographical sketch, but we have been unable
to secure the affidavits of support.

Mr and Mrs Ullmann were both born in Austria. Mr Ullmann is a writer and
lecturer, and one of the leading drematic critics. He belonged to the
staffs of newspapers that were known as defenders of democracy, and he
was instrumental in popularizing one paper S50 that it led the campaign

- against Hitlerism end- Fascism,

Hitler's occupation of Austria was a signal for Mr Ullmann to leave there.
‘He escaped to Hungary, where he waited for his wife. Both then proceeded
to Paris,France. Mr Ullmann refused to compromise in his principles
although he knew that the Gestapo had been searching for him and had

‘missed him in Hungary by just a few minutes.

In Paris, Mr Ullmann continued his fight against Hitlerism through his
writings and lectures. When war broke out, he resumed his efforts to
fight Fascism and Fifth Column activities. When the Germans marched into
Paris, Mr and Mrs Ullmann again nad to flee, They finally reached
southern France where they travied from place to place, until they
settled in the part of unoccupied France where they are at present.

My and wires Ullmann live in continued dread that the Nazi authorities’ will
demand the extradition of Mr Ullmann. ‘This, of course, is not unlikely
in view of Mr Ullmann's well known anti-Nazi activities. Mr Ullmann

has written on the subject of American democracy, and on America in
general. He was always anxious to bring to the people in his ow country,
a real knowledge of American institutions and ideals.

Miss Strunsky:

Enil Berger as a German and Hlavaty, an Austrian, have both received
their sexican visas. The difficulties which the others have ex-

periences are essentially aque to the difference between the de~

clarations the applicants made here and those made in Mexico by

their sponsors and not from the nationalityof the applicant. We tried |
to explain this in our letter 228 of May 7th. We were gjled to reaa in y
your cable 243 that you have better hopes as regards liexican visas. '
Here too, there is a marked improvement in the situation since last i
wo wrote you. he old special Mexican visas issued here acrppding i
to the #rance-"oexican agreement of August..1939 remain validand i
do not require Ite be reconfirmed by the Mexican government as was the
case up till last week. ‘herefore we have everyhope that most of {
our cases will be atle to leave on the next Hicem boat for Mexico, \
including JOHANNES ROMPLER, for whom we will arran,e a passage at

U.S.visas: Ihe prospects do not seem to be as black as feared re- |
gardin; visas for enemy aliens. Ludwig Ullmann and Hans Kalischer

they have the necessary papers.

Yours very sincerely

The hearing was not very different from

RE: ULIMANN LUDWIG & WIFT,

Dr.iiarcel !riedman phoned and advised us

that wrs,Gessner informed him that she
received a very desperate letter from the
Ulimanns in Wiarseille, that money should .. _

pe deposited with HIAS OR HICEM for their ~~
passage immediately.

Dr.Friedman suggested that Miss Lewinski
phone Miss Lilly Darvas (Molnar) who has
4275.00 for the transporation of the Ullmanns
and tell her to deposit it with the HIAS

and advise her about making all the arrange-
ments so that after this 1s done the HIAS

in Wew York can cable to their HICEM office
in Lisbon.

Miss Varvas phone number is bu 68-3953.

br, triedman will not be in tomorrow but will
be in on Friday. He does not wish time to
be wasted about the transportation arrange-
ment and that is why he suggested that Miss
4ewinski phone tomorrow jlhursday ,Nrss Darvas.

He stated further that at one time IMMiss ¥arvas
did not deposit this money for transportation
pecause Miss Lewinski had told her not to.
