Gentlemens
As requested by Dr. Ernst Simmel of Los Angeles, I am
sending to you through Mrs. Rose Laub, "Moral, Affidavit" in duplicate i
and "Affidavit of Support" in triplicate (with supporting documents) F
to aid refugee Dr. Minna Flake, now in France, to come to this .
country. :
i On August first, I sent by Clipper alr mail, registered, !
- | direct to the U. S. Consul at Marseilles, a very similar Affidavit [
4 of Support for Dr. Flake, in duplicate, and one copy thereof (without :
} documents) to Dr. Flake for her identification. H te.
The differences between the earlier affidavit end the
present one are as follows:
7 i
| 1. The earlier affidavit did not.contain the data and :
| supporting affidavit concerning my life insurance.
i 2. I sent with each copy of the earlier affidavit a
H signed letter from the office of the Collector of
i: _ Internal Revenue at Los Angeles attesting the
i payment of income tax for 1939 by my wife and myself,
: and a sworn copy of my own income tax return. With
the present affidavit I have omitted both of these
and have substituted therefor with copies (1) and
(2) photostats of cancelled checks for the income
taxes and with copy (3) the unsigned copy of the
letter from the Collector of Internal Revenue. I
hope these will suffice.
IT understand from Dr. Simmel that Dr. Flake, a fine humeni-
terien and excellent children's physician, was a very active worker
against the Nazis in Germany and is therefore now in considerable
denger. I hope you will be able to help in her case. of
If there is more that I should do in this instance, please
let me know.
Yours very truly,

Dear Miss Adams:

|
t I am enclosing according to your suggestion brief
: bicep ine sketches for Dr.Minna Flake and Walter and Renée
arth.
. As to the affidavits of support, one affidavit
for Dr. Minna Flake was sent by air-mail by Dr.David ©runs-
wick, residing at Los Angeles(Calif) to the American Consul
. at Mardeille, while a copy of this affidavit was forwarded
to Mrs.Flake at siontauban.
Affidavits of support for the Barth family were
sent to Montauban by .
a) Dr.Hanna Heilborn at Los Angeles,
i b) Mir. Albert Lepawsky at Chicago. ,and
ec) myself, .
Copies of the two latter affidavits are enclosed for your in-
formation. Since my friend air, uepawsky is an american citizen,
born at Chicago, and is the executive director of the Federa-
I tion of tax Administrators, I wonder whether his statement
H : eoncerning Walter and enée Barth "both are well educated
and. healthy young persons, who will be,I am convinced,a real
asset to the United States and loyal citizens.."(page 2 of
i the enclosed affidavit of July 26,1940) may be accepted as
! Affidavit of Sponsorship. I am going to try to reach wr.Le~ j
| pawsky as soon as possible in order to ask him whether he may
fo - give an additional affidavit for sponsorship. I am writing
\ also to 4os Angeles in order to procure the same affidavit

that her husband and her child may be counted on the Swiss

I such a hint may be possible in view of the geave danger

i As seon as I am able to secure the missing documents
