Dear Clarence,
I am turning to you in extremis. Knowing
how busy you are I have tried not to add to your
burden. However, a situation has now arisen which
makes it imperative that I write to youe —
- Largely under the leadership of Mrs. Neilson, ©
the wife of President Neilson of Smith College,
we have been able to work up a real interest in
this city in the fate of German refugee children.
A small committee has veen formed both of towns-
people and of the college, which has secured some
twenty places in reputable families for such re-
fugee children. The plan is to have two families
at least for each child, which will enable us even
where the children should not be adopted in the long
run to keep them in this neighbourhood for quite a
time--I should say at least a year. We have fur-
thermore already raised a small fund for extra-
ordinary expenses, and we have secured the support
of dentists and physicians, who will offer their
services freo. ,
, While the set-up is really as good as it can
be and while we were originally told by people
close to the National Coordinating Coumittee that
there was a need for places in families, we are
now informed that twey might have to wait a yoar
or longer before the first child arrives in Northamp-
tone “Appadently visa regulations are still such
as to make 1t impossible to bring any substantial
munber of hildren to this country. President .
Neilson will discuss the matter at the end of this
week with Professor Chamberlain of Columbia in
ae
order to sce whether any pressure can be brought
to bear upon Washington. At best, however, this
is going to be a @etious business and I am very
much afraid that unless we can get at least two
or three children interest in this neighbourhood
will collapse again.
Thus, my question ko you is really whether
you could get us two or three children at the
earliest possible moment. I am sure that if the
Pyriends! Service Committee can't manage it, there
is no other organization wiich can. If any affi-

in this neighbourhood.

for the hour you gave me in Philadelphia. Since then 1} have seen Pelix

refugees, and in some educational projects in witch I am engaged. He

on his help if it should be needed in the course of my naturealisation

First ofall, I want to thank you egain for all the help
you have given us here in Northampton. Your presence added
immeasurably to the success of our conference. It also helped
us substantially in our plans for the establishment of a
training unit for relief workers both at Smith end at Mte
Holyoke colleges.
In the rush of the conference I forgot to raise with you
a problem which is both urgent and which you ere in the best
position to solve. I enclose a letter from Miss Emma Carr, of
Mts Holyoke College, who is probably the most outstanding
woman chemist in this country. The letter is self-explanatory,
but I went to emphasise again that we have all the money nec-
essary to bring Professor Henri to Mt. Holyoke, where she will
be well taken cere of. The whole problem is to get the girl
out of Toulouse. Could you please take up this matter with
Burne Chelmers? Also, could the American Friends Service Committee
undertake the whole business of transportation, if we turned
the necessary funds over to you? I know how busy you ere, but
I sholld be most greteful if you could enswer me at your earliest
convenience, ae Mise Carr has called me twice already to find
out whet can be done. If the A.P.S.Ce cannot undertake the
matter, to which orgenisation siould we turn?

I am writing to you both as a Friend and on behalf
of the Work Camp Committee of ISS. As you know "Work
Camps for America" of ISS have been developing rather
satisfactorkly during the last year. Unfortunately, it
would appear that there is scant collaboration between
the Friends camps and the camps of the ISS, and unless
I am very much mistaken, even a certain spirit of compe-
tition has grown up which to my mind is both unnecessary
end undesirable. As a result of it, students in our
various campuses are somewhat confused Bbout the relative
purposes and merits of the two camps, which is again
unfortunate.
As I took Sass it, I feel very strongly that the
two movements ought to come to a better understanding
of their respective tasks and the possibilities for closer
collaboration. Why we have not been able to have such
close cooperation before is a matter on which I have no
very definite opinions. I feel certain, however, that
4f we skould have a little informal meeting of three
people each from the Friends and from the 135, we could
eapily iron out any difficulties or misunderstandings
that may exist at th resent time. I, therefore, wonder
whether wee could such e meeting either in Philadelphia
or preferably in New York. I very much hope that you :
yourself wiki take part in it, and I shall be glad to
attend on my part. If you agree to this suggestion, could
you puggest a convenient date some time in October. If
I am*attendime, it wovld have to be on a Friday or Saturday
preferably during the second half of October as I am
carrying a very heavy schedule during the first part of
the week, and as my first two weekends in October are signed
UD.

the course of our meeting. 2
This ic simply to remind you that I am available in cace there should
be need for somebody of my backcround and cuslificetions. I am deter- _

if in some way or other I could get tied up with the new Lehman office.
You know that I have an intimate knowledge of Kuropean countries and that
T am a good linguist. What ie perhaps just as impertant, I am intimately
acyunainted sith relief and reconstruction work and problems as I have been
actively engaged in that kind of work for close to 12 years, between
1925 snc 1926. Even hefore that I collaborated in the work of the
European Student Relief almost as soon as 4t becan in 1920, _
The two regions in "urope which I know best are, of course, Central
Europe, including Germany, Austria, Crachoslovaxda, Huncary, end the
Balkan comitries. If I hed my choive I would rather work on problems
releting to the Balkans them on these related to Cermenr and fustria.

ef Slovene and I could work up « working <nowledge of it within a reason~
able time. I em deeply attached to the Balkan countries to which I have
paid almost annuel and prolonged visits while I wac with ISS. I have
been cecorated for my work in Jugoslevia and in Bulgaria. This I mentdon
only because it shows that es a foreigner I have been sble to gain the
confidence of the Balkan people. | | |
= have asked the Oxford University Press ’0 send a copy of my latest
book which seule with problems of reconstruction . At the same time
i am afraid that it may take a week or so before you receive it as
the mails are very slow just now. : :
