Background

Scope and Content:

The collection contains copies of manuscripts of poetry, plays, and essays by Alfred Neumeyer. There are also 10 original notebooks of Alfred and Eva Neumeyer they used for teaching various classes in literature and art at Mills College and St. Mary's College.

Biographical / Historical:

Alfred Neumeyer (1901-1973) was born in Munich. He was an art historian and scholar who taught at the University of Berlin until 1935 and thereafter on the faculty at Mills College in Oakland, California. He also taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, and Harvard University. Alfred Neumeyer held a doctorate in art history from the University of Berlin. He was also a published novelist.

Eva Maria Neumeyer (1901-1992) was born Eva Kirchheim in Berlin. She married Alfred in 1926 and, like her husband, emigrated to the United States via Canada in 1935. Eva Neumeyer later taught art and literature at Mills College and St. Mary's College.

Alfred and Eva had a son, Peter, three grandchildren.

Acquisition information:
Glenn Willumson, emeritus professor of Art History and Museum Studies at the University of Florida, donated the notebooks in 2024. The provenance of the remainder of the collection is unknown.
