Background

Scope and Content:

The collection contains bound copies of the "Wiedergutmachung" section of Aufbau, 1957-1977, unbound issues, 1980s-1990s and articles, theses, and other publications written about Aufbau.

The library of the Leo Baeck Institute New York digitized all issues of Aufbau published from the start of the newspaper in 1934 through 2004. Access the issues via the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/aufbau/.

Biographical / Historical:

Aufbau began publication in 1934 as a newsletter for the German-Jewish Club of New York and was published in New York until 2004. Aufbau was relaunched as a monthly publication in Zurich, Switzerland in 2005. It originally served as an informative club newsletter, but, over time, the publication's articles also began to focus on international events, especially the treatment of German Jews under the Nazi regime. During the late 1930s and World War II, Aufbau was one of the leading anti-Nazi publications of the German press in exile.

Acquisition information:
All items in this collection were transferred to the University Libraries, M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives in 2005 and earlier.
