Scope and Content:

This collection contains documents for inventions that were submitted to John Fane while he was Lord Privy Seal.

Biographical / Historical:

John Fane, tenth earl of Westmorland, was born on June 1, 1759 and succeeded in the earldom in 1774 after the death of his father John Fane, ninth earl of Westmorland. Fane was appointed joint postmaster general in 1789, and held a variety of political positions including Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, deputy lieutenant of Northamptonshire, and Master of the Horse. In 1789, Fane was appointed to Lord Privy Seal which he would hold for 35 years. Fane had five children with his wife Sarah Anne Child and five children with his second wife Jane. Fane died in December 1841.
