Abstract:
This collection contains manuscripts of two children's books by Maud and Miska Petersham. The Petershams were a Caldecott Medal winning married couple who wrote and illustrated children's books together, primiarly between the late 1920s and mid-1950s.

Background

Scope and Content:

This collection contains manuscripts of two children's books by the Petershams. The first manuscript is a partial manuscript entitled, Auntie and Celia Jane and Miki, which was published by Doubleday, Doran & Company in 1932. This manuscript also contains handwritten notes on the blank pages in the back of a copy of The Ark of Father Noah and Mother Noah (Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1930) also written and illustrated by the Petershams. The second manuscript is entitled, The Rooster Crows. The manuscript is a dummy paste-up with original color illustrations of American Rhymes and Jingles, published in 1945 as The Rooster Crows: A Book of American Rhymes and Jingles. This book was awarded the Caldecott Medal.

Biographical / Historical:

Maud Fuller Petersham (August 5, 1890 – November 29, 1971) and Miska Petersham (September 20, 1888 – May 15, 1960) were married writers and illustrators of children's books. They won the Caldecott Medal in 1946 for their 1945 book The Rooster Crows: A Book of American Rhymes and Jingles.
