BUREAU of NATIONALIST LITERATURE.

B. FRANKLIN HUNTER,
112 Pine Street.

Philadelphia, May 25th, 1896.

Esteemed Friend :
The appeal for financial aid which was sent

out from this Bureau under date of April 13th has met with an
encouraging response, and our friends have given unquestionable
evidence of their recognition of the importance of this work and
the great need of its continuance.

The heavy demands, however, which at various times have been
made upon our pamphlets have seriously depleted our stock: so
much, in fact, that other editions of our publications are imme-
diately necessary in order that we may be able to meet future
requirements, and we are in urgent need of the funds to defray
these expenses.

It is hoped, therefore, that on account of the pressing
demands of our present situation we may be pardoned for sending
this second appeal to those who did not find it convenient to
respond to our April letter.

It is indeed gratifying, as well as inspiring, to know that
our literature is so much sought after and appreciated}; and it
may be stated here, to the credit of those who have so nobly sus-
tained this educational work, that, since the establishment of
this Bureau, nationalist literature in pamphlet form has been
given a greatly increased circulation.

Our publications have been circulated in all parts of the
United States, and, since they bear the advertisement of this
Bureau, persons into whose hands they have been placed have been
brought into communication with us and our list of workers and
correspondents has thereby been increased,

It is highly important, therefore, since this Bureau is now |
so extensively known that we should have the necessary resources |
to continue its existence ; and it is believed that none of |
those who have aided us in the past would be willing that this
work should now suffer for the lack of pecuniary aid.

It is sincerely hoped that all to whom this letter is sent
will kindly respond. Do not hesitate to send a contribution, |
thinking it may be small. Fractional parts of a dollar, if not |
convenient to send larger amounts, will be very much appreciated.

Believe me to be
Very fraternally yours,
B. FRANKLIN HUNTER.

Benjamin T. Whitehouse,
171 Central Ave., Dover, N. H.
Dear Comrade.

Your letter received with money order to the amovnt of $4. I have
turned $1 over to the Labor News Co. and they will send yow the 10 copies
of the proceedings of the National Convention; the remaining $3 I have
entered for the General Agitation Fwnd as per instructions.

I have been in correspondence with Mr. Bangs of Buck's Harbor before
this and have urged him to organize a section right where he is as the
best way to make a start for the organization of the State. I do not
think that the plan outlined by him for he starts with expectations that
are not warranted by the situation there prevailing. However I shall
write him again and see what can be done. What we need in Maine is a few
more live sections and once they are in the field and a State Committee
formed that State Committee could prepare for a campaign and gather in
all Socialist elements as members at large where sections covld not as
yet be formed.

Yours fraternally,

H. GAYLORD WILSHIRE oe oa Editor

125 EAST 23d STREET, NEW YORK

July 18, 1903.
My Dear Comrade:

Believing you to be interested in any proposition that
seeks to increase the means of propaganda, and in making that propaganda
more effective and widespread, we write you relative to our magazine
in the hope that the local comrades will be able to take hold of the prop-
osition made in the enclosed circular, and enter the contest for the
prizes offered therein.

The secretary of your Local could act as our agent in hand-
ling subscription cards, and either sell them for cost price or at the
flat rate of $1.00 per year, and in that way make quite a snug sum for
local propaganda, and at the same time be putting first class literature
in circulation without any expense to the Local. We all know from
experience how much work must be done to get the people to have even
a faint understanding of our principles.

One of the most effective ways of securing the results above
mentioned is by the circulation of literature that treats of current

events from the Socialist standpoint, and beyond question, Wilshire’s

Magazine is doing that now. It is merely a question of the degree of

support the comrades are willing to give such an enterprise that measures
its power for good.
Trusting that this matter will receive your early and favorable

consideration, we remain,

Yours for Socialism,

125 EAST 23d STREET, NEW YORK

New York, July, 1903.

Dear Comrade:—

Your name has been given to me as an earnest Socialist and
worker in the cause. You are probably acquainted with Wilshire’s
Magazine, which is the leading exponent of Socialism in this country
and in Europe. No better propaganda work can be done than having it
placed regularly in the hands of all Socialists and those who can be

made Socialists.

The circulation of the Magazine is now over 100,000. We
desire to make it (before the Campaign of 1904), at least 250,000.

We want your aid and enclose herewith some circulars for your
information, hoping that same will receive your approval and prompt

action.

The subscription price to single subscribers is $1.00 per
year, and club rate to workers 50 Cents. We sell postal subscription
ecards, each ecard being good for one year’s subscription. A specimen

eard is herewith enclosed. Price 50 Cents each.

May we have you with us in helping advance the great cause
which Wilshire’s Magazine represents? We solicit your aid to hasten
the coming of the Co-operative Commonwealth, and incidentally to
secure for yourself one of the valuable prizes we give to agents.
Why not get that $1400.00 Automobile in your town?

An order of from one to ten dollars worth of cards will start

the work. Let us hear from you, and believe us,

Fraternally yours,
