Scope and Content:

This collection contains correspondence concerning the Van Kleeck genealogy, 1946-65; correspondence with Kenneth Hasbrouck on history and education, 1951-1956; and printed materials on New York State and Albany history, 1950-1965.

Biographical / Historical:

The Van Kleeck family was a prominent family in New York State. Edwin Robert Van Kleeck was an educator who born May 10, 1906 in Waterford, New York and graduated in 1927 from the New York State College for Teachers. He received a master's degree from Cornell in 1933 and a doctorate from Yale in 1937.

Van Kleeck served as principal of the Plattsburgh, New York Junior High School and as superintedent of schools in both Walden and Norwich, New York and Grosse Point, Michigan. He was a visiting professor of educational administration at the New York State College for Teachers from 1931 until 1935. From 1941 until his death in 1965, he served as the assistant commissioner of education for pupil personnel services and adult education for the State of New York.

Van Kleeck was very interested in history and was an amateur historian and genealogist. Van Kleeck served as a trustee of the Holland Society of New York and the Albany County Historicla Association. He was first vice president of the Dutch Settlers Society (in Albany) and a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents, the Society of the Colonial Clergy, the Hugenot Society and the hisotrical societies of Dutchess and Schoharie Counties.

Van Kleeck died November 23, 1965 from injuries he received after being struck by a car. He was survived by his wife, the former Josephine Charlotte Jones, his son Robert Nelson and his daughter Cornelia.

Mrs. Edward Van Kleeck (Josephine Charlotte Jones) donated the papers in 1967.
