President's Letter
Dear ENY /ACRL Members,
The Fall semester has arrived with all of its accompanying chaos, some of it organized, much of it not. In the midst of
all of our perennial beginning-of-semester/ new fiscal year activities, I’m sure we have all paused to think of our
colleagues on the Gulf Coast, and all of those so tragically affected in the wake of Katrina. The Program Committee is
currently discussing some recognition of, and perhaps fund-raising for, the relief efforts at our Fall Conference.
Yes, the Fall Conference! Deborah Bemnard and her committee members have been busy all summer long, and they
have organized a great slate of presenters on a topic of interest to all of us - New Directions in Librarianship. By now
all of you should have received a postcard reminder to save the date, Friday, October 21. There is more information.
available on our website at <http://www.enyacr.org/conf_Fall05.htm >. And look for registration information soon, on
the site and on our list.
The Executive Board met earlier this summer to identify the issues for the year. These include expanding the
Conference Local Arrangements handbook into a more comprehensive Planning Guide; updating the Officers’
Handbook; rethinking the number and/or timing of our conferences; vendor relations; better means of communication.
with our members; and ways to increase our membership. We welcome your input into the running of YOUR chapter.

Inga Bamello and I attended the Chapters meeting at ALA annual. During a discussion of costs for new chapter
banners (a long story with “legal” implications that we'll summarize at the conference for you), we leamed that some
state chapters have operating budgets in the hundreds, not the thousands. We are indeed fortunate to have such an
active involved membership with a healthy budget. We thank you for all that you have contributed and continue to
contribute to making ENY/ACRL so successful and an organization to be proud of.
If you work in or travel through the Capital District, please stop in and see our newly remodeled main service floor.
And I hope to see many of you in Poughkeepsie next month.

Fall Conference
Don’t miss ENY/ACRL’s Fall conference, Transitions: New Directions in Librarianship. The conference, which
will focus on our evolving roles as librarians, will be held at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New Y ork on Friday,
October 21.
Featured speakers are Frank D’ Andraia, new Dean and Director of University Libraries, University at Albany and
Steve Cohen, creator of the blog, Library Stuff www.librarystuff.net.
We will also hear from a panel of librarians who have recently reorganized and changed their departments. Tom
Mackey from The University at Albany’s Department of Information Science will showcase a web development class
that he developed for information science students.

Librarian of the Y ear Nominations
ENY/ACRL LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINATION DEADLINE: January 15, 2006
Help us honor a deserving colleague. Do you know someone who is an outstanding member of the chapter and whose
contributions have benefited the chapter and our profession? Past President Inga Bamello seeks nominations for the
annual ENY/ACRL Librarian of the Y ear Award. The Librarian of the Y ear Award is in recognition of an ENY/ACRL.
member who has exhibited a dedication to fulfilling the ACRL mission and furthering the goals and objectives of
ACRL and ENY/ACRL in particular. The award includes a plaque and a $250 honorarium, which is presented at

The Chapter seeks candidates for the spring 2006 elections. Candidates are required to be current members of the
chapter and to submit a biographical and interest statement for the ballot to the Nominations Chair, Inga Bamello at
bamello@lemoyne.edu by January 15, 2006.
The positions of treasurer and membership chair are two-year terms. The Treasurer is responsible for all bank
accounts, financial reports, and all questions relating to fiduciary matters that come before the Chapter. The
Membership Chair is responsible for promoting and tracking membership, collecting dues, maintaining the database
of members, creating an annual membership directory, and overseeing a membership “network” of liaisons on each
campus.
The position of Vice President/Program C hair/President Elect is a three-year commitment. After the first year of
Planning the conferences as chair of the program committee, the Program Chair serves as president in the second year,
and as past president in charge of nominations and awards in the third year.
It is expected that the vice president and/or the president attend ACRL Chapters’ Council meetings at Midwinter and
Annual ALA conferences to represent the ENY Chapter. Generous financial support to attend these conferences is
provided.
The Board of Directors meets three times a year. Two meetings are held at a campus centrally located in the region.
One meeting in winter is held via a telephone conference call. The chapter reimburses board members for mileage for
travel to meetings at a rate of $0.20 per mile.
If you are interested in serving on the Board, or if you know someone who might, please contact Inga Bamello at
Bamello@lemoyne.edu. Nominations should be submitted to Inga by January 10, 2006. Ballots are scheduled to be
sent out on February 1, 2006.
Notes from the Field
Binghamton University
Kate Bouman has been hired as Reference/Subject Librarian for Education, Social Work and Human Development.
Colgate
On June 1st Colgate welcomed new University Librarian, Joanne Schneider, who replaced outgoing interim director
David Hughes. Joanne comes to Colgate from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont, where she was
Director of Library and Information Services, a position she held since 2002. Prior to that she was Head of Collection
Development at Middlebury College Library.
Barbara Burd, Head of Library Instruction , has been asked to join the Editorial Review Board for Resources for
College Libraries to be published by ACRL/Choice and R.R.Bowker. Target publication date is September 2006.
Due to unforeseen delays, construction at Case Library at Colgate University will necessitate Colgate (VVC) being a
non-supplier on the OCLC Interlibrary Loan system now through Jan. 2007. Circulation and reference services will be
operating out James C. Colgate Hall (Student Union).” The George R. Cooley Science Library is operating as normal.
Phone numbers and e-mail addresses for service points for Case Library have not changed. Some personnel have new

Ithaca College
Lis Chabot, College Librarian, was recently elected as Chair of the College Library Section of the Association of

Jim Bondra, Business Librarian, and John Henderson, Natural and Social Sciences Librarian, have been promoted to
the senior rank of Librarian III.
Cathy Michael has joined the library in the newly created reference position of Communications Librarian.
Marist College
Central Search: Federated searching at Marist C ollege
The Cannavino Library of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New Y ork has implemented Central Search, a federated
search engine. A simple like search box sits at the top of each subject resources page. Students can enter a single
search that Central Search will run in the appropriate databases as well as the Library Catalog, Google and Google
Scholar.
The Library endeavored to match the search environment provided to the preferred search tools of students. Faculty
and students have responded favorably to the combination of Google simplicity with the scholarly content of research
databases.
Google Scholar and Marist
Marist is one of the Institutional Access targets in Google Scholar.
Marist patrons will find full text article links to the electronic journals we subscribe to. Recognition is automatic on
campus. From.a home computer, patrons can set up Scholar Preferences to display Marist holdings.
New York State Library
The Research Library has welcomed two new Senior Librarians: C orey Fleming in Public Services and Caleb Derven
in the Computer Applications Group.
New Library Development Specialists are Mary Beth Farr and Maribeth Krupczak.
The Library is now making free Intemet wireless access available in the Reference Room on the 7 th floor of the
Cultural Education Center during library hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00 am. - 5:00 p.m.) to individuals with their own
wireless- enabled laptop computers.
Custom “Love Y our Library” license plates are now available from the New Y ork State Department of Motor
Vehicles. Proceeds from the plate’ s annual foe ill bap supe ine ate Libeay’ s Statewide Summer Reading

Plattsburgh State University
Nancy J. Hoshlyk, Associate Librarian, has been appointed Chairperson of the Library Faculty. This is a three year
appointment, 2005/06- 2007/08.
Carla List-Handley, Distinguished Librarian, retired effective 7/31/05.
Elin O'Hara has been appointed Senior Assistant Librarian in the Instruction Unit. She will replace Carla List-
Handley as SUNY Plattsburgh's liaison to ENY-ACRL.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
RPI’s Rensselaer Research Libraries was one of three beta test sites for Version 3.0 of Ex Libris’ Digitool product. The

test, which took place during the better part of June and July, was aimed at readying the Library to meet its
commitment to institute an Electronic Theses and Dissertations archiving process during this academic year. Since the
general release in August, staff continue to define planning and policy issues while also experimenting with the
archiving of architectural images collections and Institute archives material.
Siena
Catherine L. Crohan, Coordinator of Library Instruction, and Dennis E. Tamburello, O.F.M., Professor of Religious
Studies and College Core Coordinator will be presenting "Creating an Information Literacy Plan for First-Y ear
Students: Librarians and Faculty Collaborate" at Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries’ annual October Conference for New
England Librarians on October 7, 2005. The theme of this year’s conference is Collaborations on Campus:
Opportunities for New Partnerships.
John Vallely, Cataloger/Adjunct Professor of History, was named Professor of the Y ear 2004-2005 by the Siena
College History Club.
Rebecca Rector is retuming to Siena as Adjunct Reference Librarian and Records Manager starting in Fall 2005. She
previously worked at Siena from 1997-2000.
Skidmore
Ruth Copans, College Librarian, is spending the fall semester in London co- directing Skidmore's London First Y ear
Experience and co-teaching a First Y ear Seminar on detective fiction. During the spring semester, Ruth will be in Paris
on sabbatical working on her research into contemporary book artists and the ways they reference historical bindings
and book structures in their work. In Ruth's absence, Susan Zappen is Acting College Librarian.
Barbara Norelli, Instructional Services/Social Sciences Librarian presented, "Legal Research: Intemet Resources &
Blogs," at the OCFS (Office of Children & Family Services)Technology and the Law CLE (Continuing Legal
Education) Program, June 14, 2005 at Albany Law School, Albany, NY and June 21, 2005 at Sheraton Syracuse Hotel,
Syracuse, NY.
Sullivan County Community College
Director of Library Services, Mr. Jon Grennan, promoted to rank of Associate Professor.
Public Services Librarian, Mr. Richard Arnold, promoted to rank of Professor.

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Linda Galloway has joined the staff at Moon Library as a part time temporary visiting assistant librarian staring with
the fall 2005 semester. Linda staffs the reference desk and also teaches a section of ESF 200 Information Literacy.
Linda is a recent graduate of the Syracuse University MLL.S. program.
Anne Chernaik, an M.L.S. Syracuse University student is inteming with Moon Library for the fall 2005 semester.
Anne assists with multiple library services such as reference, our ESF 200 Information Literacy course and cataloging.
Jane Verostek was promoted from Senior Assistant Librarian to Associate Librarian effective at the start of the fall
2005 semester.

Jane Verostek authored the article "Affordable, Effective, and Realistic Marketing" which will appear in a special
marketing issue of College & Undergraduate Libraries - Volume 12, Numbers 1 and 2, scheduled for publication in
December 2005. The special marking issue will also be published as a monograph entitled Real-Life Marketing and
Promotion Strategies in College Libraries: Connecting With Campus and Community, to be released in April 2006.
Jo Anne Ellis, Associate Librarian at Moon Library was been presented with the College President's Quality of
Worklife at ESF Award over the summer of 2005. This award is given annually to an employee who "has
demonstrated willingness to go the extra mile and to make the extra effort to perform a required service, to provide
information, or to deliver assistance; exemplary performance of duties beyond ordinary expectations or requirements
and involvement in campus activities; and a positive work attitude that has enhanced the quality of worklife for others
in the campus community consistently during employment at the College."
Over the summer of 2005 - the Franklin Moon Library at SUNY ESF installed a wireless networked called
“Evergreen” and purchased laptops to loan to students for use within the library.
SUNY New Paltz
Susan Kraat, Associate Librarian and Coordinator of Instructional Services at SUNY New Paltz, received tenure.
SUNY Oswego
Barbara Shaffer has assumed the role of Coordinator of Reference Service.
Michelle Parry is our Head of Interlibrary Loan on a permanent basis.
Barbara and Michelle have been influential at Penfield Library before assuming these roles, and we are pleased they
have accepted these positions. Y ou go gids!
SUNY Potsdam
Rudy Leon has joined the SUNY Potsdam College Libraries as Senior Assistant Librarian, with responsibilities in
Instruction & Collection Development. She received her MS in LIS at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign
(UIUC) in 2004, and has previously worked at UIUC and Illinois Wesleyan University. She is also affiliate faculty in
Women's & Gender Studies.
SUNY Upstate Medical University
Eric Luft, Curator of Historical Collections, has published SUNY Upstate Medical University: A Pictorial History.

Rebecca Kindon has joined the Reference and Educational Services team. Rebecca is a graduate of Le Moyne College
and received her MLIS from SU. She served a six month intemship at the Upstate Health Sciences Library while she
was a Student, and prior to that worked full time at University Health Care Manlius where she managed the practice's
medical records.
Syracuse University
Personnel Changes:
Syracuse University has named Suzanne Elizabeth Thorin as University Librarian and Dean of Libraries. Thorin,
who comes to Syracuse from Indiana University (IU), will assume her new position October 1. She will be a member
of the Chancellor's Cabinet and the Vice Chancellor's Cabinet. Thorin has served as the Ruth Lilly University Dean of
University Libraries and as Associate Vice President for Digital Library Development at IU since 1996. For more

Denise Stephens, Acting University Librarian/Associate University Librarian for Public Services, left SU in June to
become Vice Provost for Information Services at the University of Kansas- Lawrence. At KU, she will provide
leadership for libraries, computing, network services and related activities.
William Garrison, Associate University Librarian for Information Management and System Services, was named.
Interim University Librarian in June. He will serve in that role until the arrival of new university librarian, Suzanne
Thorin, on October 1.Full story
Kelly Hovendick, Interim Head of Professional Programs and General Reference Services (PPGR), and Sociology &
Women's Studies Subject Specialist, has resigned her position as of July 13. Kelly has accepted a position as
Coordinator of Reference and Instructional Services at the Social Science Libraries at Y ale University. While the
search for a permanent PPGR department head is ongoing, Tasha Cooper, Associate Librarian & Subject Specialist for
Communication Sciences & Disorders, Journalism, Library Science and Mass Communications, and Suzanne Warren,
Senior Assistant Librarian and Subject Specialist for Business, Economics, Management and Sports Management, will
share interim departmental leadership responsibilities. Tasha will serve as Interim Head of PPGR Operations,
managing the operational aspect of the department, including the reference desk. As Interim Head of PPGR Collection
Development, Suzanne will provide leadership for collection development- related activities such as approval plan
profiling and collection budgets.
Pamela Whiteley McLaughlin was named Director of Digital Library Development at Syracuse University Library,
effective May 1, 2005. She was previously head of the Access and Digital Services division. In her new position, she is
responsible for defining, establishing, and managing SU's digital library program and leading the Digital Library
Advisory Committee. In other service activities, McLaughlin chaired the Nylink Council Strategic Planning Committee
this past year and gave a presentation on the new plan to Nylink members at the Nylink annual meeting in May in
Saratoga Springs. She was elected secretary of the Nylink Council Executive Board for 2005-2006.
McLaughlin is also an adjunct faculty member in the Syracuse University School of Information Studies and taught
Collection Development and Access at the 2005 Summer Institute for Leadership and Change.
Exhibitions:
Library Displays Depression-Era Holdings in Radicalism.: In support of the "If All of Central New Y ork Read The
Grapes of Wrath" initiative and the Syracuse Stage production of The Grapes of Wrath, the Library's Special
Collections Research Center displayed holdings related to radicalism in literature and art. The exhibition, titled
"Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath: Bitter Fruit of the Depression," was available in the sixth floor exhibit gallery of E.S.
Bird Library until May 27, 2005. The exhibition was supported by the Peter Graham Fund for Radicalism in Literature
and Art.
University at Albany
Karen Brown published "Use of General Preservation Assessments: Process," in Library Resources & Technical
Services 49, no. 2: 90-106. This is the first of a two-part report. The second part is expected to be published in Volume
50, no. 1 (2006).
Laura Cohen published "Finding Scholarly Content on the Web: From Google Scholar to RSS Feeds" in Choice 42
Special Issue: 7-17. Laura's Web-based "Primer in Boolean Logic" was cited in "Web Sites Worth a Click" in
Information Outlook, Vol. 9 No. 7 (July 2005): 7, and was reproduced in Lome Greene's "Y ou’ re Hired!", Arlington,
VA: E3 Publishing (2005).
Laura Cohen was promoted to Librarian in July, 2005.
Frank D’Andraia is the new Dean and Director of Libraries as of August 1, 2005. Dean D’ Andraia previously held
the position of Dean and Professor of Library Services at the University of Montana, Missoula. Other previous
positions include Director of Libraries at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks; Head of Technical Services at

the University of Califomia, Riverside; and Assistant Director for Technical Services at the University of Louisiana,
Lafayette. Dean D’ Andraia is an active member of ALA and ACRL and currently serves on the editorial board of
Resource Sharing and Information Networks.
Roger Gifford retired from his position as Head of the Systems Department effective August 30, 2005. Roger and his
wife will travel south for several months before pursuing other interests in the spring. The University Libraries wishes
him well!
Suzanne Turner, Head of the Interlibrary Loan Department, has received the University at Albany President's award
and also a SUNY Chancellor's award for Excellence in Librarianship. "
Hong Zhou has joined the University Libraries as the Web Application and Database Development Manager in the
Information Systems Department. Hong previously worked at Johns Hopkins” Welch Medical Library where she
served as Senior Programmer/Analyst. She holds an MLS. in Computer Science from Rutgers University, and MLE. in
Pattem Recognition and Intelligent Systems from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and a
B.S. in Computer Science and Technology from the University of Science and Technology in China.
