Report of the Undergraduate Academic Council to
the UAlbany Senate--October 4, 2004

The task force on advisement was convened late July and has

met most weeks since. We expect some recommendations to be passed to
the UAC and possibly the Senate Executive Committee after another
couple of meetings.

The UAC had 4 meetings 9/13, 9/20, 9/27 and 10/4 (today).

We expect to meet almost every week for 1 hour. Our assignments of
councilers to committees is done and the completion of the committees,
including the Gen. Ed. committee and assessment subcommittee is in
progress. In the process, we observed that the charter committee
membership rules require a minimum of 7 teaching faculty in the UAC if
no counciler serves on more than one committee, but the charter only
allows 6-8 teaching faculty coucilers. Hence, we propose today a bill
to amend the charter increase the size of the UAC and make more
flexible the choice of general education assessment subcommittee chair.

We discussed a proposed revision of the History honors major following
the action of last year's UAC session which included a request for
proposed catalog copy. We remark that proposed catalog copy should be
supplied with new or revised program proposals. Dick Collier is now
working with the department to include procedural and academic
clarification in the catalog copy since supplied; we expect it to be
approved soon. I also anticipate we will approve and forward the
proposal to change the name of the Latin and Caribbean Studies Dept.

Last week and today we are being led by Dean of

Undergraduate Students Faerman to discuss undergraduate academic issues
in the draft Mission Review. We (will have) had Asst. VP. for Academic
Affairs Sheila Mahan report on admissions and continued our discussion
of the Mission Review.

Respectfully submitted by
Seth Chaiken
UAC Chair
