Technology in the Department of Music and Theatre
IT IS HEREBY PROPOSED THAT THE FOLLOWING BE ADOPTED:
1. That the University Senate approves the attached program proposal as submitted by the
Department of Music and Theatre and approved by UAC and UPPC.
2. That it take effect for the Fall 2019 semester.
3. That this proposal be forwarded to President Havidán Rodríguez for approval.

The Theatre BA was reactivated in 2014. As you can see from the chart below, there has been a steady increase in the number
of students majoring in Theatre since that time.

Building on this positive growth, the Theatre Program in the Department of Music and Theatre now proposes three new minors:
Musical Theatre, Acting, and Theatrical Design and Technology. Each minor is designed to provide a focused set of courses
that complement the curriculum and the liberal arts focus of the Theatre BA. The Musical Theatre and Acting minors will be
restricted to Theatre majors. The Theatrical Design and Technology minor will be open to all University students.
The introduction of these minors will allow the Theatre Program to “test the waters” in terms of student interest in each area.
Should there be sufficient and sustained interest, the Program will then investigate the possibility of adding concentrations to the
Theatre major at some future time. There are currently 58 THR majors (1st and 2nd majors). Enrollment projections for the
minors for the first year are as follows:
Musical Theatre – 20 students
Acting – 20 students
Theatrical Design and Technology – 10 students

The Theatre Program proposes to add a minor in Musical Theatre for Theatre BA students who desire a focused set of
coursework in the area of Musical Theatre. Combining the Theatre major with the minor in Musical Theatre will prepare students
for both advanced study and performance in this area. This minor is restricted to Theatre majors.
Three new courses are being proposed in as part of the new MT minor. Course action forms are attached.

Dear Andi and Kathy,
The Music Program welcomes the inclusion of Music Theory I (AMUS 245) in the Music Theatre minor. Please
note that we no longer restrict this course to the Fall semester, but have begun offering it in the Spring as well. We
have already submitted a CAF to that effect (as part of a Program revision).
It’s also worth noting that AMUS265 (Keyboard Harmony) will no longer be a co-requisite. This change will also
make it simpler for Music Theatre minors to take Theory I. Of course, theatre students are welcome to work on their
keyboard skills as an elective if they choose.
I look forward to seeing the formal proposal for the Minor when it is available.

As part of our proposed new minor in Musical Theatre, the Theatre Program wishes to include AMUS
245, Music Theory I, as a possible elective. It would be in a group of six courses, from which the student
must choose one course to complete the minor. This minor will be restricted to Theatre majors, so we do
not anticipate need for a significant number of seats in any term. But, as you know, the process requires
that we include a response from the Chair, indicating that the inclusion of AMUS 245 would meet with
your approval.

Semester Objectives:
• Establish and maintain a healthy vocal technique
• Gain a better understanding of how your voice functions (anatomy, physiology, and physics of sound)
• Learn how to care for and maintain your singing voice
• Apply healthy technique to repertoire (solo and group)
• Learn to convey style and groove in singing
• Acquire basic sight singing and ear training tools
• Learn to sing harmonies
• Learn basics of IPA (International Phonetic Language)
• Have a basic understanding of the broad musical skill set and industry musical-expectations needed to
be a musical theatre performer.
Semester Requirements:
• Students must bring in any song they love and sing it on the first day.
• Students must fill out a peer observation sheet while observing solos and groups they are not in. These
are due at the end of each class.
• Any rehearsing should be recorded in class so student can practice at home. (iPhone or similar device is
permitted for this)
• Any in-class coachings must be recorded and a short reflection will be due the following class.
• Weekly Practice Journal
• Students are also responsible for a midterm, and final exam. These are both written and performance
based.
Attendance:
• Students are permitted one (1) excused absence, each additional excused absence will result in the loss
of two points from your final grade of the 100 points possible.
• If you have a legitimate reason for not attending class (illness (with a doctor’s note), court date, religious
holiday, family emergency, etc.) please email me before class starts for the absence to be
excused.
• Unexcused absences will result in the immediate loss of two points off your final grade. Assignments
missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up. Being tardy two times will count as one
absence.
• If you have lost your voice but are otherwise healthy you should still attend this class and can take notes
to be handed in at the end of class to count towards your participation in any daily singing
activities. You should also record any rehearsing so you can practice at home and participate.
Academic integrity: Plagiarism and academic dishonesty in any form is inexcusable and will result in a
failing grade for the course. In some cases, academic dishonesty may warrant further disciplinary action
from the University. I will report all cases of academic dishonesty in the class to the Office of
Undergraduate Education regardless of the severity of the infraction. It is your responsibility to familiarize
yourself with the University Academic Regulations and Standards of Academic Integrity outlined in the
University Bulletin.

Preferred Pronouns: This course affirms people of all gender expressions and gender identities. Students
will be asked on the first day of class what name they would like to be called, and also their preferred
pronoun.
Safe Space: Please let me know if there are topics that may cause you emotional distress, to assist me
in selecting music. Also please share with me any medical conditions that I should be aware of to help
ensure your health and well-being. The process of performing should never inflict damage on you, both
physically and psychologically. Please avoid accessing triggers in your life that have the potential to do
harm, remember that performance is not therapy.
Practicing: As singing is a skill that one cannot hone overnight, it is required that each student practices a
minimum of three times outside of class and will record these in a practice journal. I will provide a
template and go over these requirements on the first day of class.

Week 1
Intro to course, basic voice science and function, warm ups, crash course in sight-
reading, ear training, and theory. Everyone sings prepared solo so I can divide into voice
parts for group material. Intro to the practice journal. “How to” on the Extra Credit and the
keyboard layout.
Week 2
Review and continue vocal function, ear training, and sight reading basics. Start first
group song (Traditional MT). Start first solo cuts (Working on Legit styles).
Week 3
Quiz on voice anatomy, Discuss music terms (groove, style, dynamics etc.) and how to
relay these to an accompanist. Sight Singing, Ear Training, Work Group Song 1.
Week 4
Go over registration definitions and vowel modification basics. Finish Group Song 1, talk
about techniques in solo versus ensemble singing. Sight-reading and ear training. Work
first solo cuts

Learn IPA basics as applied to singing and in class group IPA projects. Learn Group
Song 2 & 3 (Operetta and Vaudeville).
Week 6
Quiz on IPA, Registration, and Vowel Modification, work group songs 2-3, sight-reading
and ear training.
Week 7
Harmony Boot Camp & Musical Sides Bootcamp, learning two parts of the same song,
and assign 2nd solo cuts (Legit + Contemporary styles 1960s-2000) .
Week 8
MIDTERM: In Class exam covering vocal science, basic musical concepts, and IPA.
Sectionals and group songs 1-3 performed in class. Sight reading and ear training. First
practice journal due.
Week 9
How to cut music for your book, crash course on leading tones, chords, keys, and
cadences. In class music-manipulation project. Learn Group Song 4 (Golden Age).
Week 10
Work on Group Song 4, sing through 2nd solo cuts. Sight reading, ear training.
Week 11
Quiz: Learn Group Song 5 (Contemporary 1 ) assign solo cut 3 (Pop/Rock), harmony
exercises
Week 12
Learn Group Song 6 (Contemporary 2), small group split. Harmony exercises. Sight
Reading, Ear training.
Week 13
Work solo cut 3, work group songs 5-6, in-class group harmony assignment, how to
prepared musical sides lecture and practice. HW: learn a musical side.

Review for Final, Musical Sides review and practice. Work through all group songs (1-6),
sight reading, ear training. Assigned a musical side for next week. Second practice
journal due
Week 15
Final: Written (material post-midterm), Prepared musical Sides, Sight reading and Ear
training. Student will also be responsible for singing their best cut from the semester.

Possible Class Showcase:
At the discretion of the professor, instead of singing your best cut from the semester in our last class, we
may set up an alternative time for you to do this so the other faculty and your invited friends can watch.
Should we choose this option you will receive at least two weeks notice and you will be involved in the
scheduling process.
Extra Credit:
For extra credit you may complete musictheory.net exercises and hand in your printed (not emailed)
progress reports for extra points on your final grade. Each progress report must show at least 30
exercises completed and a 95% accuracy mark to count towards credit.
There are a maximum of 15 exercises and each completed exercise will count as 1/3rd (.333 - rounding
up) of an additional point towards your overall grade. 1 exercise = .34 point, 2 exercises = .67 point,
Three exercises = 1 point, 6 exercises = 2 points, and so on. You may get a maximum of 5 points
towards your final grade. You may not repeat the same lesson for additional credit.
You may not work with others (I will cross check time/date stamps).
I have detailed on the next page the lessons and corresponding exercises that will count towards any
extra credit.

To assist the musical theatre student in their vocal development. The student will develop a vocal warmup, expand vocal
range, and work to strengthen pitch, tone, and overall musicality. The student will also develop a musical theatre repertoire by

Course Description
To assist the musical theatre student in their vocal development. Over the
course of the semester, in half-hour lessons, students will develop a vocal
warmup, expand their vocal range, strengthen pitch, tone, and overall
musicality. Students will also develop their musical theatre repertoire by using
material from the musical theatre canon.
Objectives:
• Improve accuracy in all areas of musicianship.
• Cultivate their repertoire of material that is type appropriate.
• Expand and strengthen their vocal range.
• Develop stronger breath support.

Work Ethic: Private Singing lessons requires your physical and intellectual
engagement. It is essential that everyone arrives to studio on-time and prepared
to work. You are expected to have all assignments prepared in advance, so you
can do the best work possible. You will be expected to rehearsal outside of class.
Attendance: Students are permitted one (1) excused absences, each additional
excused absence will result in the loss of two points from your final grade of the
100 points possible. If you have a legitimate reason for not attending class
(illness, court date, family emergency, etc.) please email me before class starts
for the absence to be excused. Unexcused absences will result in the immediate
loss of two points. Assignments missed due to unexcused absences cannot be
made up. Being tardy two times will count as one absence.
House Rules: The rules of the studio are meant to ensure your safety and
comfort, and intended to foster manners and mutual respect. The UAlbany
Theatre Program strives to be an inclusive learning community, respecting those
of differing backgrounds and beliefs. As a community, we aim to be respectful to
all individuals in this class, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual
orientation.
Food: You may bring water, but eating is not permitted in the acting studio.

Distractions: Please do not use computers, iPhones, cellphones, Blackberries,
or any other electronic devices in class. This is a performance-based class and
it’s important to be engaged in your lesson. Using electronic devices will result in
the loss of (1) point from their final grade. Please keep these devices in your
bags, with the ringers off.
Academic integrity: Plagiarism and academic dishonesty in any form is
inexcusable and will result in a failing grade for the course. In some cases,
academic dishonesty may warrant further disciplinary action from the University.
I will report all cases of academic dishonesty in the class to the Office of
Undergraduate Education regardless of the severity of the infraction. It is your
responsibility to familiarize yourself with the University Academic Regulations
and Standards of Academic Integrity outlined in the University Bulletin.
Extra Credit: The only extra credit available is one point for the following:

Please do not ask for other extra credit opportunities. Actors earn their final grade
by their thoughtful and timely work throughout the semester.
Grading
Your singing jury comprises 30% of your grade. The rest of the grade will be
determined by the weekly lesson rubric (70%). Grades are determined by both
vocal ability and progress, work in weekly lessons, applied voice exams, and your
commitment to vocal study. It is expected that students will rehearse outside of
their voice lessons a minimum of three hours per week.
Singing juries will be scheduled in the evening during the final week of classes prior
to finals week. Students will present two songs from their repertoire over the
semester, one selected by the student and the second by the professor.

Work Ethic: Musical Theatre Workshop is a studio class and requires your physical

acting should never inflict damage on you, both physically and psychologically. We
will always work from the perspective of the “magic if”. Please avoid accessing
triggers in your life that have the potential to do harm, remember that acting is not
therapy.
Clothing: Please come to class dressed appropriately: low-heeled shoes, sneakers
or boots that stay on (no slippers or flip-flops please), and comfortable clothes in
which you can move and sit on the floor. Short skirts and tight jeans are not
conducive to our work, unless it serves as a costume for your scene. When you are
working in front of the class, you must remove tongue studs and throw away gum,
as they interfere with your speech. If you wear your hair long, bring something you
can use to clip or tie your hair back.

Assignments
Scene Work: Students will be assigned two-person scenes with a duet from three
major musical theatre genres throughout the semester. Each scene/song will require
analysis, research, interpretation, and three hours per week of outside rehearsals to
prepare students for the in-class rehearsals and presentation.
Activities: Various activities will be assigned throughout the semester, which require
a minimum of two hours of outside work to complete.
Ensemble Project: The class will rehearse and present a production number from a
contemporary musical. Areas of emphasis include vocal blending and harmonics,
creating characters within an ensemble, and establishing relationships within an
ensemble.
Performance Responses: Based on your response to the two assigned productions,
write a minimum of three pages (12 point, times new roman font, 1” top and bottom
and 1.25” left and right margins). Response topics will be announced during the
class prior to the production’s respective opening performances. Any papers turned
in after then will lose 2 points per day.
Notebook/Journal: Actor’s should maintain a dedicated notebook for class, bringing
it to studio each day. The journal will be collected periodically for review.

The Theatre Program proposes to add a minor in Theatrical Design and Technology for students who desire a focused set of
coursework in this area. The Theatrical Design and Technology minor will prepare students for both advanced study and
employment in this area. This minor is open to all majors.
