Senate Bill No. 0304-23
UNIVERSITY SENATE
UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
Introduced by: Undergraduate Academic Council
Date: April 19, 2004
REVISIONS OF UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN
“EARTH SCIENCE” AND “HISTORY/SOCIAL STUDIES”
IT IS HEREBY PROPOSED THAT THE FOLLOWING BE ADOPTED:
1. That the conversion of these two programs from “Teacher Education” to “General” be
adopted.
2. That these become effective immediately.
3. That this policy be forwarded to the President for approval.
Rationale:
When the University’s undergraduate “Teacher Education” programs were discontinued,
only two were not represented by existing “General” programs at the undergraduate level:
“Earth Science” and “History/Social Studies.” The departments of Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences and History have therefore proposed the attached major sequences which will
allow the student to complete the respective major as an undergraduate and then enter a
master’s program in Basic Classroom Teaching for the given discipline.
The Undergraduate Academic Council judges that the proposals meet in rigor and
structure the requirements and expectations of the University. In addition, both proposals
have been carefully reviewed by the Academy for Initial Preparation, and it has been
determined that each will fully meet the subject area requirements needed within the
field.
Since the Teacher Education versions of these programs will no longer be registered with
SUNY or the State Education Department after this academic year, the Undergraduate
Academic Council recommends that when approved these programs be implemented
immediately, to enable students currently on campus to continue to pursue these majors.
