Proposed Revision University Life Council Charter with Rationale (Italicized)
X.9. UNIVERSITY LIFE COUNCIL
X.9.1. Composition
X.9.1.1. The Vice President for Student Success or designee, ex officio
X.9.1.2. The Vice President for Finance and Administration or designee, ex
officio [TITLE CHANGED BY AMENDMENT 04/27/15]
X.9.1.3. The Director of Athletics or designee, ex officio [added position]
X.9.1.4. The Coordinator of EAP, or designee, ex officio [TITLE CHANGED BY
AMENDMENT 04/27/15]
X.9.1.5. At least 6 and not more than 8 Teaching Faculty, (at least 4 must be
Senators)
X.9.1.6. At least 2 and not more than 4 Professional Faculty (one must be a
Senator)
X.9.1.7. At least one, but not more than two Classified Staff Members
[added position]
Rationale: this is an added position w/ potential compositional increase of 1,
the council believes classified staff members should be represented in the
University Life Council since they are vital members of our community and
contribute to the quality of life at our institution.
X.9.1.6. One Support Staff Member
X.9.1.7. One graduate student
X.9.1.8. At least one, but no more than three graduate students (one must
be a Senator)
Rationale: this change, with the potential compositional increase by 2
students, was requested by graduate students. The Council believes graduate
representation should be consistent with the undergraduate representation on
the council. University life is one of the areas of major student interest at each
level.
X.9.1.9. At least one but not more than three undergraduate students (one must
be a Senator)
X.9.1.10. No more than 2 voting members selected from Faculty or Staff who
are not students or Voting Faculty.
X.9.1.11 Staff support for the Council shall be designated by the Vice President
for Student Success. [SECTION ADDED BY AMENDMENT 5/2/05]
X.9.2. The Council shall be responsible for the quality of university life outside
of the formal instruction program, which is recognized to have significant
impact on the overall educational experience. The Council shall recommend
policies to the Senate governing university community conditions that affect the
overall health, safety and well being of students, faculty and staff. This includes
but is not limited to counseling, medical clinical services, financial aid,
international student affairs, placement, residence living, student behavior and
conduct, student government, athletics and recreation, and services and
programs for part-time and emeriti faculty.
that foster an inclusive experience for teaching faculty, professional faculty,
classified staff and students that promotes an environment conducive to
academic success, social engagement, personal growth, and well-being.
Rationale: the new wording reflects wider university language, “includes but
not limited to” language removed due to the belief that mentioning specific
units or areas highlighted those units as being more important that others.
X.9.6. The Committee on Athletics
X.9.6.1. Composition
X.9.6.1.1. The Director of Athletics, or designee, ex officio
X.9.6.1.2. At least two of the Teaching Faculty members of the IAAB
X.9.6.1.3. At least 4 but not more than 6 Faculty members, including at least
3 members of the Council and at least two Teaching Faculty
X.9.6.1.4. At least 1 but not more than 2 students
X.9.6.1.5. No more than 2 voting members selected from Faculty or Staff
who are not students or Voting Faculty.
Rationale: The Committee on Athletics is deleted to avoid redundancy –
The Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board (IAAB) is the formally
constituted campus oversight body for the University's athletics program
authorized and established under the guidelines of the SUNY Board of
Trustees. Appointed by the President, the membership of the IAAB
consists of four voting members of the University faculty, four student
members (two of whom are student-athletes), one alumni member, and
two administrative staff. The IAAB is the primary mechanism for
affording campus constituencies outside of the Athletics Department
input into the formulation of policies and the opportunity for policy
review. According to its Bylaws, the IAAB's responsibilities include
consideration and initiation of all questions of policy including but not
restricted to budget, facilities, promotional activities, gender and racial
equity, academic progress, and personal conduct of student-athletes and
athletic personnel.
