Re:
Reorganization of Information Science disciplines within CEAS

This memorandum documents organizational changes now taking place in the information
science programs within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Following a lengthy
analysis, a great deal of discussion, and the consideration of a range of alternatives, the following
organizational structure is now being implemented:

• The Departments of Informatics (INF) and Information Studies (IST) are merged into a
single department, to be known as Information Science. Internally, we will refer to the
merged department as ISC, but we are not requesting a change in the three letter course
designations at this time.

• The new Department of Information Science will offer the BS in Informatics, the MS in
Information Science, and the PhD in Information Science. There are no curricular
changes arising from the reorganization.

• Dr. Philip Eppard will serve as Chair of the new department for the time being. Nan
Carroll has moved from my office to ISC to provide staff support.

These changes are in immediate effect.

Placing our information science programs (BS, MS, PhD) into a common academic unit will
allow us to operate more efficiently and promote the programs more effectively. It should also
contribute to stabilizing what have been declining enrollments in the graduate programs.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
