Report of the Undergraduate Academic Council to the UAlbany Senate meeting
October 25, 2004
The task force on advisement was convened late July and has met most weeks
since. We expect some recommendations to be passed to the UAC and possibly
the Senate Executive Committee after another couple of meetings.
The UAC had 6 meetings 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/18 and 10/25 (today).
We expect to meet almost every week for 1 hour. Our assignments of
councilers to committees is done and the completion of the committees,
including the Gen. Ed. committee and assessment subcommittee is in progress.
In the process, we observed that the charter committee membership rules
require a minimum of 7 teaching faculty in the UAC if no counciler serves on
more than one committee, but the charter only allows 6-8 teaching faculty
coucilers. The bill 0405-3 UPC Charter change to increase the size of the
UAC and make more flexible the choice of general education assessment
subcommittee chair was announced and is on the Senate floor for 10/25.
We discussed a proposed revision of the History honors major following the
action of last year's UAC session which included a request for proposed
catalog copy. We remark that proposed catalog copy should be supplied with
new or revised program proposals. The procedural and academic clarifications
in the catalog copy Dick Collier worked out with the department were
reviewed and approved.
We approved the proposal to change the name of the Latin and Caribbean
Studies Dept; after passing the GAC it will be brought to the Senate.
We reviewed and approved an action from last year's Council concerning the
Music Department's performance major requirements.
We received and passed to our Committee on Admissions and Academic Standing
a proposal from the Business School concerning MSI215 equivalents to meet
admission and degree requirements.
We are approved and are now presenting a Senate bill to Eliminate the
Pre-"Fall 2000" general educations requirements for those (few) students who
remain subject to them. We also reviewed an administrative action to reuse
some of the general education course suffix letters.
During our 9/27, 10/4, 10/18 and 10/25 meeting we have (or will have) been
led by Dean of Undergraduate Studies Faerman to discuss undergraduate
academic issues in the draft Mission Review. On 10/4 Asst. VP. for Academic
Affairs Sheila Mahan reported on admissions and continued to hear our
discussions of the Mission Review. Our latest focus was on enrollment
goals.
