RESOLUTION TO URGE THE UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY, STATE
UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY, NEW YORK TO ACT IN REGARDS TO
CHILDCARE for STUDENTS

WHEREAS, students with children are in need of affordable, low-cost childcare services on
campus;
WHEREAS, students who receive a stipend need more information on how to apply for state
funding to help with childcare costs and non-stipend students find it hard to afford the rising
costs of childcare;
WHEREAS, many SUNY campuses (http://system.suny.edu/university-life/child-care/) in New
York offer child care support in some form, affordable childcare, transportation costs and
logistics are also needed. For example, SUNY Stony Brook, offers programs to help subsidize
student childcare costs to make it affordable for students; and
WHEREAS, students at the University at Albany have expressed strong support for this issue;
WHEREAS, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Educationi
recommend on-site child care facilities and recommend that institutions have policies in place to
create affordable child care on campuses; and
WHEREAS, students and faculty advocating for child care believe that child care ought to be
viewed as a human rights issue within higher education, a retention and recruitment issue for the
campus, and that parents should be afforded the necessary resources to pursue higher education
including childcare; and
WHEREAS, the Wages and Benefits committee, a part of the Graduate Student Association,
supports the need for affordable childcare on campus and stands in solidarity with all student
parents at the University at Albany in recognition of their valuable contributions not only in
work and research but also in the richness and diversity of our campus; and
RESOLVED, that the council urges the University Administration to support student parents
with childcare, disseminate information about childcare programs, consider affordable on-site
childcare for student parents and offer information about funding opportunities and
transportation to access affordable childcare.
RESOLVED, that the Senate support and advocate for affordable child care options for student
parents.
