Senate Resolution No. 9596-02R

UNIVERSITY SENATE

UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK

Council on Promotions and Continuing Appointment

Introduced by: Council on Promotions and Continuing Appointment
Date: April 26, 1996
WHEREAS:

e The Council has received from the Faculty Advisory Council of the College of Arts and
Sciences proposed revisions to the guidelines for promotion and continuing appointment at
the University at Albany; and

e The Council has also received copies of statements from other faculty proposing changes to
the guidelines; and

e There is a national conversation taking place on the definition of the faculty obligation as
well as faculty rewards and responsibilities; and

e The Council recognizes that it may be appropriate to change the campus guidelines as part of
a concerted effort to refine the focus of the University for its next phase of development; and

e The Council believes that such changes to the guidelines require opportunities for broad-
based, serious discussion among the entire University faculty; and

e The Council believes that such opportunities have not yet been provided;

BE IT NOW RESOLVED THAT:

The Council recommends that the Executive Committee of the University Senate appoint a Task
Force composed of members of the teaching and library faculty to review the current guidelines
for continuing appointment and promotion, to solicit comments and proposed revisions from the
faculty, and to propose revisions that in the judgment of the Task Force may be appropriate. The
Council further recommends that such proposed revisions be debated, amended if necessary, and
voted upon by the University faculty during the 1996-97 academic year so that the sense of the
faculty may be known before final action is taken by the Senate.

Adopted by unanimous vote of the Council on Promotions and Continuing Appointment on 1
April 1996.
