Clarifying Amendment on charges of the Council on Academic Assessment 
and its committees (Section X.6)
IT IS HEREBY PROPOSED THAT THE FOLLOWING BE ADOPTED:
1. That the proposed clarifying amendments of the University Senate Charter be 
adopted.
2. That this amendment go into effect immediately upon approval. 
3. That this amendment be forwarded to the President for approval. 
Rationale:
The Council on Academic Assessment is proposing the revisions detailed below to 
correct outdated information, and to more clearly and accurately describe its charge and 
the charges of its committees.    
PROPOSED SENATE CHARTER AMENDMENT 0910-
Sections pertaining to the Council on Academic Assessment
X.6.1.1.The Dean of Graduate Studies, the Dean Vice Provost of Undergraduate
Studies, and the Assistant Vice President of for Strategic Planning and 
Assessment, or their designees, ex officio
X.6.2.The Director of Program Review and Assessment shall function as the 
staff support person for the Council shall be the Director of Assessment, Office of
Undergraduate Studies and as a non-voting 
 
 ex officio
 
  member when the 
 
 
Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research, Planning, and 
Effectiveness is in attendance.
X.6.4. In conjunction with appropriate administrative offices the Council shall
be responsible for  involved in the process of
 
  1. scheduling, 2. coordinating and 
3. supervising the variously mandated or cyclical reviews of continuing academic 
programs.
X.6.5. The Council as a whole 1. shall 1. review the actions and assessment 
reports of its committees 2. shall be responsible for formally recommending that 
an assessment report be accepted by the University Senate. Based on findings 
from its committees or its own deliberations 3. may shall recommend policy 
changes to the University Senate and may recommend to the Senate Executive 
Committee that it refer a question or issue to another council 4. shall make 
recommendations for procedural changes to the Provost and/or appropriate 
administrative offices. 
Sections pertaining to the Academic Program Review Committee
X.6.6.1. The Academic Program Review Committee shall be responsible for 
1. ensuring and overseeing overseeing and ensuring periodic reviews of each of 
the University’s academic programs, with consideration for established external 
accreditation cycles. 
2.In addition, the Committee shall be responsible for ensuring overseeing and 
ensuring compliance with the SUNY-mandated assessment of undergraduate 
majors and graduate degree and certificate programs.
X.6.6.4. The Committee shall submit its review of the assessments of academic 
programs, and of the Program Review process, to the Council and to the 
director or chair of the assessed program for further transmission to 
appropriate parties.
X.6.6.5. The Committee may undertake recommend to the Council the 
assessment of instructional programs other than those for which assessment is 
required by SUNY mandate. These would include, but would not be limited to, 
undergraduate minors, undergraduate certificate programs, and various 
University-wide (Uni/Unl) offerings.
Sections pertaining to the General Education Assessment Committee
X.6.7.4. The Committee shall conduct an assessment review the assessments for 
each General Education category on a regular cycle.
