The new Faculty Bylaws specify more frequent communication between the University Senate
and its constituencies. This is the second in what will be a series of approximately monthly
bulletins.
Highlights of issues to be addressed by the Senate 10/25/2004:
A matter of primary importance to the University community is the review of the draft Mission
Review document, available on MyUAlbany. This document will be the basis for SUNY funding
decisions and annual assessment of presidential performance. UPC is considering the draft for
issues of balance, tone and direction; the appropriate councils are also considering graduate,
undergraduate, research, assessment, and governance issues. UPC has recommended that
deans, chairs, and faculty note items and programs of excellence and national recognition. That
and other commentary should be sent to Sheila Mahan, smahan@uamail.albany.edu in the
Provost’s office.
Also available at the bottom of the MyUAlbany page is the “UAlbany Databank,” made public at
the last Senate meeting as the result of some years of effort by UPC/EPC, which presents
budget and departmental information to the University community.
Just prior to that Senate meeting, the Governance Council met to review the proposed CNSE
bylaws and charter. They reported to the Senate a series of items inconsistent with current
Faculty Bylaws and Senate Charter, and recommended that a joint committee be formed with
the CNSE faculty to resolve the issues. The CNSE faculty concurred and a joint committee has
been formed.
For discussion at the upcoming Senate meeting, the Committee on Ethics in Research has
drafted a new policy on misconduct in research available at
http://www.albany.edu/senate/index.htm for review by the University community.
Other ongoing Senate Council activity may be found on the Senate website,
www.albany.edu/senate, and includes assessment of new programs and courses, research
centers and institutes, and fifty-two cases for promotion and continuing appointment.
