RE: Report to Senate
Hi Gail -- you are correct in your figure, which I obtained from data publicly available about our undergraduate admissions at:
http://www.albany.edu/ir/whatdata.htm
Specifically, this figure is provided in the pdf file available when linking to "Undergraduate Profile."
The 14.5% figure is special admits for freshman admitted to the University as a whole.
However, I also indicated that special admits for Athletics are restricted to 2.5% of the targeted Freshman class, which, according to JR Gaige in
Admissions, was approx. 2250 for 2010, or approximately 56 accepted student-athletes. As my report indicated, only 43 of these student-athletes
actually enrolled in 2010. I would also note that "special admits" does not necessarily mean that GPA is below traditional criteria; the category simply
means that the applicant has, for whatever reason, not met traditional criteria.
Sorry to get so technical, but I hope this helps to clarify matters. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions.
Teri

Dear Teresa,
I’m following up on your report to the Senate on March 14. At last Monday’s Senate meeting when the minutes were reviewed, a change was requested
stating that the percentage of students being admitted with consideration was reported by you as being 44% and not 14.5% as I had written in the
minutes below. I noted that I had also used the 14.5% figure in the minutes when you reported to the Senate Executive Committee. I’m writing to ask for
your clarification on this figure.
Best regards,
Gail
Professor Harrison reviewed statistics in several different categories for student athletes, beginning with comparative data for incoming students in
2010. The information shows that the academic qualifications of student athletes compares favorably with that of students at large. She added that
UAlbany student athletes are of the highest quality. Professor Harrison was asked to provide additional information concerning students athletes
admitted with consideration. She said these are students whose GPAs are below those of the traditional admits but they bring with them talents in other
areas such as music or art. Approximately 14.5% are designated as being admitted with consideration.
